{"id":1171515,"date":"2020-03-13T13:48:17","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T19:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1017042"},"modified":"2020-03-13T13:48:17","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T19:48:17","slug":"philippines-to-dethrone-indonesia-as-largest-global-nickel-ore-producer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1171515","title":{"rendered":"Philippines to dethrone Indonesia as largest global nickel ore producer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Global<br \/>\nnickel production will drop significantly over 2020, as major producer<br \/>\nIndonesia&#8217;s nickel ore export ban comes into effect, Fitch analysts assert in a<br \/>\nrecent report. <\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This drop<br \/>\nwill be slightly offset by the impact of rising production growth in the<br \/>\nPhilippines where some currently suspended mines will become operational again,<br \/>\nwhile the country aims to plug the likely supply gap caused by the Indonesian<br \/>\nexport ban, Fitch says. <\/p>\n<p>Analysts maintain other major producers such as Russia, Australia and Canada will maintain stable production growth year-on-year. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Fitch-nickel-graf.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1016973\" width=\"617\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Fitch-nickel-graf.jpg 617w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Fitch-nickel-graf-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Global<br \/>\nnickel ore production will fall by 15.4% y-o-y in 2020 as a result of the<br \/>\nintroduction of a nickel ore export ban in Indonesia, despite rising production<br \/>\ngrowth in competitor the Philippines as well as steady output in other major<br \/>\nproducers, Australia, Canada and Russia. <\/p>\n<p>In the<br \/>\nlonger term, Fitch forecasts global nickel production to grow by an annual<br \/>\naverage rate of 1.7% y-o-y over 2020-2029, a significant slowdown from the 6.7%<br \/>\ny-o-y average achieved over 2010-2019, which was boosted by higher nickel<br \/>\nprices at the time and strong Indonesian output before another export ban in<br \/>\n2014.<\/p>\n<p>By 2029, Fitch expects global annual nickel production to reach 2.8mnt, up from 2.1mnt in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>Indonesia<br \/>\nsurpassed the Philippines as the largest global producer in 2017 following the<br \/>\nintroduction of stringent environmental regulations, but Fitch analysts believe<br \/>\nthe tables will turn from 2020 onwards with the Philippines set to regain its<br \/>\nspot as the largest global producer as the Indonesian government restricts<br \/>\nexports of nickel ore. <\/p>\n<p><em>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchsolutions.com\/products\/sector-intelligence\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"full report here.
