{"id":1170508,"date":"2020-03-09T15:36:40","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T21:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kereport.com\/?p=69802"},"modified":"2020-03-09T15:36:40","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T21:36:40","slug":"the-virus-dr-steven-hatfill-an-expert-in-pandemics-opines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1170508","title":{"rendered":"The Virus, Dr. Steven Hatfill an expert in pandemics, opines"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/www.kereport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/music-msicadn-d-music.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption>A lot of ignorance out there.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>v<\/p>\n<p>S<strong>teven Jay Hatfill<\/strong>\u00a0(born October 24, 1953) is an American\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Physician\">physician<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virology\">virologist<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biological_weapon\">biological weapons<\/a>\u00a0expert.<\/p>\n<p>A former biodefense researcher for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army_Medical_Research_Institute_of_Infectious_Diseases\">United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases<\/a>&nbsp;(USAMRIID) at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Detrick\">Fort Detrick<\/a>, Hatfill came to the public eye after being suspected in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2001_anthrax_attacks\">2001 anthrax attacks<\/a>, of which he was later exonerated.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-exonerated-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Hatfill became the subject of extensive media coverage beginning in mid-2002, after television cameras showed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_Bureau_of_Investigation\">FBI<\/a>&nbsp;agents in biohazard suits searching his apartment and then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Attorney_General\">Attorney General<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Ashcroft\">John Ashcroft<\/a>&nbsp;naming him a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Person_of_interest\">person of interest<\/a>&#8221; in the investigation.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-exonerated-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Hatfill&#8217;s home was repeatedly raided by the FBI, his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telephone_tapping\">phone was tapped<\/a>, and he was extensively&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surveillance\">surveilled<\/a>&nbsp;for more than two years; he was also fired from his job at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science_Applications_International_Corporation\">Science Applications International Corporation<\/a>&nbsp;(SAIC).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-Freed-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;At a news conference in August 2002, Hatfill denied that he had anything to do with the anthrax letters and said &#8220;irresponsible news media coverage based on government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/News_leak\">leaks<\/a>&#8221; had &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Character_assassination\">destroyed his reputation<\/a>&#8220;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-exonerated-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Hatfill filed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawsuit\">lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;in 2003, accusing the FBI agents and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Department_of_Justice\">Justice Department<\/a>&nbsp;officials who led the criminal investigation of leaking information about him to the press in violation of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Privacy_Act_of_1974\">federal Privacy Act<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-exonerated-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2008, the government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Legal_settlement\">settled<\/a>&nbsp;Hatfill&#8217;s lawsuit with a $4.6 million annuity totaling $5.8 million in payment..<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The government officially exonerated Hatfill of any involvement in the anthrax attacks, and the Justice Department identified another military scientist,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Edward_Ivins\">Bruce Edward Ivins<\/a>, as the sole perpetrator of the anthrax attacks.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-exonerated-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeffrey_A._Taylor\">Jeffrey A. Taylor<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Attorney_for_the_District_of_Columbia\">U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia<\/a>, wrote in a letter to Hatfill&#8217;s lawyer that &#8220;we have concluded, based on laboratory access records, witness accounts and other information, that Dr. Hatfill did not have access to the particular anthrax used in the attacks, and that he was not involved in the anthrax mailings.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hatfill#cite_note-exonerated-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2004, Hatfill filed lawsuits against several periodicals and journalists who had identified him as a figure warranting further investigation in the anthrax attacks. Hatfill sued the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times_Company\">New York Times Company<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times\">New York Times<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;columnist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicholas_Kristof\">Nicholas Kristof<\/a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defamation\">defamation<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defamation_per_se\">defamation per se<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intentional_infliction_of_emotional_distress\">intentional infliction of emotional distress<\/a>&nbsp;in connection with five of Kristof&#8217;s columns in 2002.
