{"id":1170428,"date":"2020-03-09T10:20:58","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T16:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1016528"},"modified":"2020-03-09T10:20:58","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T16:20:58","slug":"chiles-main-copper-mines-report-mixed-results-revenue-drops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1170428","title":{"rendered":"Chile\u2019s main copper mines report mixed results, revenue drops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chile\u2019s Codelco, the world\u2019s top copper producer, saw output<br \/>\nfall once again in January to 118,600 tonnes, a 6.8% drop when compared to the<br \/>\nsame month in 2019, amid a perfect storm of falling ore grades at the largest deposits,<br \/>\nwater scarcity and social unrest.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The country had reported a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/chiles-copper-output-down-in-2019-on-declining-grades\/\" >drop in overall production last year<\/a>, with the state-owned miner churning out 1.7 million tonnes of the red metal, the lowest level since 2008, when it generated only 1.55 million tonnes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Output at state-owned Codelco, the world\u2019s largest copper miner, fell by 6.8% in January over the same month in 2019, to 118,600 tonnes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>At that time, the giant Ministro Hales mine, which<br \/>\ncontributes between 180,000 and 200,000 tonnes of copper a year, had not yet begun<br \/>\noperations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the country\u2019s copper agency Cochilco, private<br \/>\nmines fare better. BHP\u2019s Escondida, the world\u2019s largest copper mine, produced 10%<br \/>\nmore last month (100,900 tonnes) than in the same month last year.<\/p>\n<p>Collahuasi, another massive mine owned jointly by Anglo<br \/>\nAmerican and Glencore, also registered a jump in production \u2014 20.2%, to 53,500<br \/>\ntonnes, Cochilco said.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of revenue coming from copper exports, Chile saw them decline 2.3% in February due to weak demand from its main buyer China and violent protests over inequality and social injustices. <\/p>\n<p>Social unrest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/most-chilean-mines-disrupted-as-codelco-workers-join-in-country-wide-strike\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"started in October (opens in a new tab)\">started in October<\/a> and has resulted in billions in losses to private businesses and public infrastructure, as well as damage to Chile\u2019s long-held image as the most stable and prosperous country in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>The nation\u2019s copper exports were valued at $2.5 billion in<br \/>\nFebruary, Chile\u2019s central bank said on
