{"id":1167188,"date":"2020-02-21T18:08:24","date_gmt":"2020-02-22T00:08:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1014062"},"modified":"2020-02-21T18:08:24","modified_gmt":"2020-02-22T00:08:24","slug":"deficit-should-keep-palladium-price-on-the-boil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1167188","title":{"rendered":"Deficit should keep palladium price on the boil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prices for March palladium went 1.18% up in late afternoon on Friday as the metal was trading at $2,634 an ounce on the Comex market in New York. <\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Earlier in the week, palladium futures for March delivery climbed 7.8% at $2,497.60 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Wednesday and prices kept rising after the market closed, touching $2,504.50, the highest in 30 years.  <\/p>\n<p>Tight supplies for palladium have continued to feed its price rally. A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.platinum.matthey.com\/documents\/new-item\/pgm%20market%20reports\/pgm_market_report_february_2020.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">report <\/a>from chemicals company Johnson Matthey&nbsp;estimated that the supply deficit for the metal widened to nearly 1.2 million ounces last year and is expected to deepen this year, as stricter emissions legislation in China and Europe will drive up vehicle palladium loadings. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p> Johnson Matthey put the 2019 supply deficit at 1.2 million ounces and said it was \u201clikely to deepen in 2020\u201d  <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Rhodium is also expected to deepen its deficit. The metal was <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.catalysts.basf.com\/apps\/eibprices\/mp\/defaultmain.aspx\">traded<\/a> at $13,100 per ounce on Friday.  <\/p>\n<p> Scotiabank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbm.scotiabank.com\/content\/dam\/gbm\/market-insights\/2020\/february\/metals\/Commodities-Strategy-Feb-12-PGMs.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"reports (opens in a new tab)\">reports<\/a> that even with the coronavirus crisis continuing to weigh on the \u201cDetroit of China\u201d (Hubei) and while the quantity of demand being either lost or delayed remains uncertain, overall palladium and rhodium demand will not change. <\/p>\n<p>According to Scotiabank, synchronized repricing in rhodium and palladium and the lack of viable substitution marks a new cycle &#8211; an era of higher prices versus the previous decade, but also with higher volatility. The bank also reports that palladium above ground known stocks have reached decade lows.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/visible-palladium.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1014762\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/visible-palladium.png 1001w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/visible-palladium-300x203.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/visible-palladium-768x520.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing on the horizon to change the direction of these shortages,\u201d Neal Froneman, the chief executive officer of Sibanye-Stillwater said at a presentation about the company&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/thevault.exchange\/?get_group_doc=245\/1582090417-sibanye-short-form-results-six-months-year-ended-31dec2019-19feb2020.pdf\" >results in 2019<\/a> on Wednesday, referring to palladium and rhodium. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way I put it, the CEO of an auto company won\u2019t get fired for spending $20 on a vehicle on a bit more palladium. What they might get fired for is not meeting their emissions targets. That\u2019s the critical issue,\u201d Anglo CEO Mark Cutifani told the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/61e14260-4737-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441\" >Financial Times<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>Thefts of catalytic converters <\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, thefts of catalytic converters jumped in London &#8211; from 867 in 2015 to 8,248 in 2019, according to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/557a69f4-4e4c-11ea-95a0-43d18ec715f5\" >Financial Times<\/a>. In Vancouver, 298 thefts were reported in 2019, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6320345\/icbc-catalytic-converter-thefts\/\" >Global News<\/a> reported.
