{"id":1166488,"date":"2020-02-19T07:09:03","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T13:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1014308"},"modified":"2020-02-19T07:09:03","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T13:09:03","slug":"newmonts-boddington-to-be-worlds-first-autonomous-gold-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1166488","title":{"rendered":"Newmont\u2019s Boddington to be world\u2019s first autonomous gold mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newmont (NYSE: NEM, TSX: NGT), the world\u2019s largest gold miner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmont.com\/newsroom\/news-details\/?newsId=c1dcc3b1-8f1c-4919-84c0-4bd56daa4845\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">announced on Wednesday<\/a> that its Boddington operation, in Australia, is to become the world\u2019s first open-pit gold mine with an autonomous haul truck fleet once it begins operations in 2021.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The move, said the company, which<br \/>\nwill enhance safety and productivity and is also expected to extend the mine\u2019s<br \/>\nlife by at least two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investment in autonomous haul<br \/>\ntrucks will generate an internal rate of return greater than 35% with a more<br \/>\ncontrolled and efficient haulage operation,\u201d said president and chief executive<br \/>\nTom Palmer.<\/p>\n<p>Total net investment in<br \/>\nBoddington\u2019s&nbsp;driverless Caterpillar fleet will be $150 million.<br \/>\nNewmont said it was already executing a plan aimed at providing opportunities<br \/>\nfor reskilling and redeployment of haul truck drivers to other roles supporting<br \/>\nthe Autonomous Haulage System (AHS).<\/p>\n<p>Boddington, Western Australia\u2019s<br \/>\nlargest gold mine, produced 709,000 ounces of the precious metal and 77 million<br \/>\npounds of copper in 2018. The mine directly employs approximately 2,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Newmont already owns the world\u2019s first \u201call-electric\u201d gold mine, which became part of its portfolio through its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/case-closed-newmont-goldcorp-becomes-worlds-no-1-gold-miner\/\" >merger with Goldcorp last year<\/a>.
