He alleged he should have been consulted during the negotiation of the<br \/>\njoint venture deal setting out the terms on which the mine would be built.\n<\/p>\n<p>Such agreement hit its first roadblock<br \/>\nin September, when PNG demanded to keep 40% of gold produced from Wafi-Golpu.<br \/>\nThe government then withdrew support for the memorandum of understanding,<br \/>\nciting delays caused by legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Newcrest and Harmony had been<br \/>\nhoping to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/newcrest-harmony-joint-venture-png-cost-extra-1bn-upfront\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secure a mining lease<\/a>&nbsp;for the $5.4 billion deposit early<br \/>\nlast year, before a new administration brought delays in the permitting process.<\/p>\n<p>The 50-50 partners said they were looking<br \/>\nforward to re-engaging with national authorities and progressing on discussions<br \/>\nabout the special mining licence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture is well placed to resume discussions with the PNG Government, given the constructive progress already made on the various agreements required for completion,\u201d Harmony Gold chief executive, Peter Steenkamp, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harmony.co.za\/invest\/company-announcements\/2020\/item\/1087-harmony-to-recommence-wafi-golpu-permitting-discussions\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">in a separate statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Located near the port city of<br \/>\nLae,&nbsp;in the Morobe province, Wafi-Golpu is expected to take about five<br \/>\nyears from the grant of the mining lease to the time it generates its first<br \/>\nore.<\/p>\n<p>At peak production, the mine is<br \/>\nforecast to churn out 320,000 ounces of gold and
