{"id":1162727,"date":"2020-01-30T07:48:07","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T13:48:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1012511"},"modified":"2020-01-30T07:48:07","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T13:48:07","slug":"mmg-suspends-shipments-from-las-bambas-copper-mine-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1162727","title":{"rendered":"MMG suspends shipments from Las Bambas copper mine in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese miner MMG has once again halted&nbsp;copper&nbsp;shipments<br \/>\nfrom its Las Bambas operation, one of Peru\u2019s largest copper producers,<br \/>\nfollowing a road blockade by local community protesting against alleged ongoing<br \/>\npollution of their lands.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The preventive measure, aimed at protecting trucks to and from the mine, has stopped supplies from getting through and suspended the transport of concentrates to port facilities, but is not expected to affect production volumes, local paper <a href=\"https:\/\/diariocorreo.pe\/edicion\/cusco\/corredor-minero-del-sur-vehiculos-de-las-bambas-dejaron-de-transitar-debido-huelga-de-pobladores-video-931142\/?ref=dcr\"><em>Diario Correo<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The blockade and consequent shipment suspension has been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/blockade-at-las-bambas-copper-mine-in-peru-risks-output-targets\/\" >a common issue affecting Las Bambas<\/a> since its 2015-16 ramp-up. Overall, the mine was disrupted for more than 100 days last year, with over than 70 communities along the 450 km. road to the Port of Matarani demanding action from MMG and the national government.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters claim, among other issues, that their farmland<br \/>\nhas been cut by Peru\u2019s national highway CU-135, known as the Southern Runway<br \/>\nand that emissions from trucks are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/mmgs-las-bambas-copper-mine-forced-to-file-new-environmental-plan\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beyond permitted limits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Preventive measure seeks to protect trucks to and from the mine amid fresh protests against alleged pollution.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A three-month-long environmental assessment carried out by<br \/>\nPeru\u2019s Environmental Assessment and Control Agency (OEFA) and community<br \/>\nmembers, recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/perus-environmental-regulator-imposes-new-controls-on-las-bambas-trucks\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concluded that Las Bambas\u2019 trucks are contravening regulations<\/a>&nbsp;when<br \/>\nit comes to air, noise, land and water pollution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company was asked to install dust suppressors in the<br \/>\ntowns that surround the road used by its trucks and to spray water on the way<br \/>\nprior to the trucks passing to reduce the spread of dust particles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The miner was also urged to stop using the road that<br \/>\nconnects the towns of&nbsp;Velille&nbsp;and Capacmarca between 6 p.m. and 5<br \/>\na.m., a measure that\u2019s being monitored by the environmental authority in<br \/>\nreal-time through GPS devices installed on the vehicles. Satellite technology<br \/>\nis also expected to allow OEFA staff to verify whether the trucks are compliant<br \/>\nwith speed and load limits.<\/p>\n<p>Las Bambas is the world\u2019s ninth-largest copper mine with an<br \/>\noutput of about 400,000 tonnes of the industrial metal per year, or about 2% of<br \/>\nglobal production.<\/p>\n<p>Operations at four of Peru\u2019s top copper mines, accounting<br \/>\nfor about 50% of the country\u2019s metal production, have been affected by local<br \/>\nopposition in the past few months.
