{"id":1162704,"date":"2020-01-30T05:56:03","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T11:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1012504"},"modified":"2020-01-30T05:56:03","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T11:56:03","slug":"lynas-to-build-permanent-waste-treatment-plant-in-malaysias-pahang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1162704","title":{"rendered":"Lynas to build permanent waste treatment plant in Malaysia\u2019s Pahang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian rare earths miner Lynas Corp (ASX: LYC) <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lynascorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/200130-PDF-for-WLP-Residue-2023749.pdf\" >said on Thursday<\/a> it had reached a deal with the Malaysian state of Pahang to build a waste treatment facility and so fulfill one of the several conditions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/malaysia-allows-lynas-to-continue-operating-rare-earths-plant-but-only-for-six-months\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">imposed by the government last year<\/a> for continuing operations in the country.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The miner, the world\u2019s only major producer of rare earths outside China, said the $98 million -project would be managed by local contractor Gading Senggara Sdn Bhd.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/malaysia-allows-lynas-to-continue-operating-rare-earths-plant-but-only-for-six-months\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">August last year<\/a>, the Sydney-based company was able to renew the operating licence for its Malaysian processing plant for six months subject to various conditions, including the identification of a site for a permanent facility to store its low-level radioactive waste.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Deal helps the rare earth miner fulfill one of the several conditions imposed by Malaysia last year to allow it continuing operating in the country.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Lynas was also asked to put forth a<br \/>\nplan to set up a cracking and leaching facility overseas within four years of<br \/>\nthe licence renewal.<\/p>\n<p>The company said shortly after it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/rare-earth-miner-lynas-picks-kalgoorlie-for-processing-plant\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">selected Kalgoorie, in Western Australia<\/a>, as the place to build such plant, with first-step concentrate processing expected in 2021. The cracking and leaching plant is expected to be completed in late 2022 or early 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Lynas said at the time it planned<br \/>\nto explore opportunities for the next stage of rare earth processing (upstream<br \/>\nsolvent extraction) in the same state, where its Mt Weld mine is located.<\/p>\n<p>The company, which controls just over 10% of the global rare earths market,&nbsp;has also revealed plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/lynas-close-to-securing-funding-for-rare-earths-plant-in-the-us\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">build&nbsp;a&nbsp;separation plant in the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The facility would be the world\u2019s<br \/>\nonly large-scale producer of separated medium and heavy rare earth products<br \/>\noutside of China, which currently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/china-kicks-off-national-survey-of-rare-earth-resources-amid-threats-of-supply-curbs\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accounts for 70% of global production<\/a>. Beijing also<br \/>\ncontrols 90% of a $4 billion global market for materials used in magnets and<br \/>\nmotors that power phones, wind turbines, electric vehicles and military<br \/>\ndevices.<\/p>\n<p>The series of announcement came<br \/>\nafter increased opposition and scrutiny to its Lynas Advance Material Plant<br \/>\n(LAMP)&nbsp;in Malaysia. Environmental groups and local residents&nbsp;feared<br \/>\nabout the&nbsp;impact the low-level radioactive waste the refinery generates<br \/>\ncould have&nbsp;on the health of those living nearby, and to the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Lynas said it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/lynas-on-track-to-get-new-malaysia-permit-by-march\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">on track to get its processing license renewal<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Malaysian state has approved Lynas&#8217;
