{"id":1162503,"date":"2020-01-29T11:45:11","date_gmt":"2020-01-29T17:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1012408"},"modified":"2020-01-29T11:45:11","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T17:45:11","slug":"alrosa-would-reopen-mir-diamond-mine-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1162503","title":{"rendered":"Alrosa would reopen Mir diamond mine in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russia\u2019s&nbsp;Alrosa (MCX:ALRS), the world\u2019s top diamond<br \/>\nproducer by output in carats, plans to resume operations at its Mir mine, which<br \/>\nhas been shuttered since 2017, with work on the project set to start in 2024, local<br \/>\nauthorities have said.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The underground diamond mine, which accounted for about 9% of Alrosa\u2019s output before operations were suspended, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/alrosa-keep-2017-output-target-unchanged-despite-mir-accident\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">flooded when water poured into a shaft<\/a> from an open-pit mine above it, killing eight people.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The mine, which accounted for about 9% of Alrosa\u2019s output before operations were suspended, has been shuttered since 2017 due to flooding.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Its former manager, Alexey Burkser, was found <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/ex-head-of-alrosas-flooded-russian-mine-found-dead-in-custody\/\" >dead in a pre-trial detention centre in October<\/a>, a day after he was arrested&nbsp;on suspicion of violating safety rules. Authorities said there were indications that his death had been a suicide.<\/p>\n<p>The governor of Yakutia, where the mine is located, said on Wednesday that restoration of Mir would \u201cdefinitely take place\u201d. Aysen Nikolaev\u2019s comments contrasts with several previous statements from both Alrosa and regional authorities indicating the reopening of the mine was under study.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Alrosa said determining the viability of resuming<br \/>\noperations at Mir required deep level exploration \u2014 down to -1,300 metres \u2014 to<br \/>\nconfirm the mine\u2019s reserves and will cost about $32 million (RUB2 billion).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the decision is made that restoring the underground mine is worthwhile,\u201d the state-owned company <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.alrosa.ru\/alrosa-the-leader-of-the-world-diamond-mining-industry-reports-the-status-of-its-closed-mir-mine\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said at the time<\/a>, \u201cconstruction would take six to eight years, based on initial estimates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Alrosa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/alrosa-starts-drilling-at-flooded-mir-pipe\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">began test drilling at the site<\/a> to determine how feasible the full resumptions of operations is.
