{"id":1161891,"date":"2020-01-26T16:47:24","date_gmt":"2020-01-26T22:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1012181"},"modified":"2020-01-26T16:47:24","modified_gmt":"2020-01-26T22:47:24","slug":"worst-drought-in-years-pushes-anglo-to-sign-water-deal-with-codelco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1161891","title":{"rendered":"Worst drought in years pushes Anglo to sign water deal with Codelco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Global miner Anglo American (LON: AAL) recognized that the severe drought affecting Chile\u2019s central region has impacted its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Los Bronces copper mine (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/anglo-american-says-chile-los-bronces-mine-project-will-not-harm-glaciers-biodiversity\/\" >Los Bronces copper mine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.angloamerican.com\/~\/media\/Files\/A\/Anglo-American-Group\/PLC\/media\/press-release\/releases\/2020pr\/q4-2019-production-report.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Q4 2019 production report (opens in a new tab)\">Q4 2019 production report<\/a>, Anglo said Los Bronces\u2019 production dropped by 28% due to water scarcity, a situation that also caused a 44% decline in the plant\u2019s processing capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProduction from Los Bronces decreased by 28%, to 71,700 tonnes with a 44% reduction in plant throughput (7 million tonnes vs 13 million tonnes) resulting from lower water availability,\u201d the quarterly document states. \u201cChile\u2019s central zone continues to face unprecedented climate conditions, with 2019 being one of the driest years on record and the driest since the start of the current decade-long drought.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>According to Anglo, the negative results at Los Bronces were partly offset by strong mine performance, in particular a step-up in shovel productivity and planned higher grades (0.99% vs. 0.81%)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Los Bronces closed 2019 with an overall production drop of 9%, as it was only able to generate 335,000 tonnes of fine copper. Guidance for the year had been set on 359,000 tonnes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given these results, Anglo decided to go ahead with a water deal with Codelco\u2019s Andina division, a massive mine adjacent to Los Bronces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agreement between the two miners entails that clean water from Andina\u2019s Ovejer\u00eda tailings pond is to be transported seven kilometres by truck to Los Bronces\u2019 tailings facility, known as Las T\u00f3rtolas.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latercera.com\/pulso\/noticia\/la-sequia-cumplio-amenaza\/986946\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"local media (opens in a new tab)\">local media<\/a>, Codelco has said that this is a good use for the resource because its industrial water either accumulates in the pond or evaporates as is not apt for agricultural use or human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Los Bronces is operated by Anglo American together with Codelco and it is among the world\u2019s largest copper mines.
