{"id":1161042,"date":"2020-01-21T10:20:27","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T16:20:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1011825"},"modified":"2020-01-21T10:20:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T16:20:27","slug":"gold-fields-taps-rbc-for-potential-sale-of-stake-in-chilean-gold-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1161042","title":{"rendered":"Gold Fields taps RBC for potential sale of stake in Chilean gold project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African miner Gold Fields (JSE, NYSE: GFI) is said to<br \/>\nhave hired investment bank RBC Capital Markets to explore the sale of a 30%<br \/>\nstake in its Salares Norte&nbsp;gold project, in Chile northern Atacama region.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/gold-fields-salares-norte-project-in-chile-granted-environmental-permit\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">received environmental approval<\/a> for the construction of\u00a0the mine last month, has been looking for a partner to develop the project since November.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Nick Holland said at the time the intention<br \/>\nwas for Gold Fields to retain a majority stake, adding that a decision to whether<br \/>\nto go ahead would be made in the first half of 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Discovered in 2011, Salares Norte is one of five gold<br \/>\nprojects set to begin operations in the South American nation over the next three<br \/>\nyears.<\/p>\n<p>The asset&nbsp;hosts 5.2 million ounces of gold, 39.2<br \/>\nmillion ounces of silver and 695 million pounds of copper.<\/p>\n<p>Construction is estimated to cost $834 million and generate<br \/>\n2,700 jobs&nbsp;up to the end of 2022, assuming it gets the board\u2019s approval.<br \/>\nAbout 900 workers would be employed when the mine is operational, Gold Fields<br \/>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Once up and running, Salares Norte would generate 450,000<br \/>\ngold ounces a year over a 12-year mine life.<\/p>\n<p>Chile\u2019s gold production peaked in 2000 at 54.1 tonnes, data from the country\u2019s copper commission,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cochilco.cl\/Documents\/yearbook.pdf\" >Cochilco, shows<\/a>. The nation, the No.1 copper producer and second largest lithium producer after Australia, currently ranks 16th\u00a0among the world\u2019s top gold producing nations, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/minerals\/?product=gold&amp;graph=production\" >IndexMundi.com<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other gold
