{"id":1160697,"date":"2020-01-19T14:08:47","date_gmt":"2020-01-19T20:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1011696"},"modified":"2020-01-19T14:08:47","modified_gmt":"2020-01-19T20:08:47","slug":"chilean-mining-commission-to-investigate-insurance-fraud-denounced-by-codelco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1160697","title":{"rendered":"Chilean Mining Commission to investigate insurance fraud denounced by Codelco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chilean parliament\u2019s Mining Commission announced that it will investigate allegations against an insurance company accused by Codelco of inflating policies for workers at the Radomiro Tomic y Chuquicamata copper mines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last week, Codelco filed a complaint before Santiago\u2019s 29 Civil Court against Chilena Consolidada, a firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=14&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiu-6vRupDnAhXVu54KHWjgCB0QFjANegQIBBAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bnamericas.com%2Fen%2Fnews%2Fzurich-doubles-chile-life-business-with-euroamerica-purchase&amp;usg=AOvVaw3lcY7vPZfGaecez0oDcO2v\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"linked (opens in a new tab)\">linked<\/a> to Zurich Insurance Group, accusing it of using an intermediary called Gestiones y Servicios to blow up premiums for life and personal accident insurance and sell them to four of its unions.<\/p>\n<p>In a media statement, the state-owned company said the total cost of such deals added up to $22 million between 2005 and 2018. Half of the money was paid by Codelco and half by its workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However and despite <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a couple of years of conversations (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latercera.com\/pulso\/noticia\/dialogo-secreto-codelco-chilena-consolidada\/978966\/\" >a couple of years of conversations<\/a> between the copper giant and Chilena Consolidada to try to solve the case, the insurer said it would only recognize payments made from August 2018 onwards. The proposal prompted Codelco to go to court.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"local media (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biobiochile.cl\/noticias\/nacional\/chile\/2020\/01\/19\/comision-de-mineria-de-diputados-anuncia-investigacion-por-caso-de-presunta-estafa-en-codelco.shtml\" >local media<\/a>, MPs Gabriel Silber and Issa Kort said that the Mining Commission will analyze the file submitted by Codelco before the tribunal.
