{"id":1159036,"date":"2020-01-09T12:00:44","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T18:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1010844"},"modified":"2020-01-09T12:00:44","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T18:00:44","slug":"bmw-becomes-first-carmaker-to-join-responsible-mining-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1159036","title":{"rendered":"BMW becomes first carmaker to join responsible mining group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German luxury vehicle maker BMW <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2020\/01\/08\/bmw-joins-irma-highlights-efforts-to-source-ethically-mined-resources\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">has joined a global group that promotes ecologically and socially responsible mining<\/a> in large-scale operations, becoming the first car company to be part of the certification&nbsp;program.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csrwire.com\/press_releases\/43343-Initiative-for-Responsible-Mining-Assurance-Gains-the-BMW-Group-as-First-Carmaker-to-Join-Global-Effort\" >Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance<\/a>\u00a0(IRMA) is one of many growing efforts to support the development of innovative and sustainable technologies in lithium-ion batteries, from mining and processing the raw materials to production and recycling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Luxury vehicle maker plans to ethically source the raw materials needed for its electric cars.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>IRMA measures the performance of<br \/>\nmine sites against its Standard for Responsible Mining, which seeks to emulate<br \/>\nfor industrial-scale mine sites what has been done with certification<br \/>\nprogrammes in organic agriculture, responsible forestry and sustainable<br \/>\nfisheries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sustainability is an important aspect of our corporate strategy and we are fully aware of our responsibility in mineral value chains,&#8221; BMW board member, Andreas Wendt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2020\/01\/08\/bmw-joins-irma-highlights-efforts-to-source-ethically-mined-resources\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the BMW Group and its stakeholders, it is of the utmost importance that environmental and social standards are adhered to throughout the entire value chain. Raw materials form the basis for every industrial production process and our need will continue to grow accordingly,\u201d added Wendt, who is responsible for purchasing and supplier networks.<\/p>\n<p>BMW <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"joined in November a pilot project (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/bmw-joins-project-improve-conditions-cobalt-mining-congo\/\" >joined in November a pilot project<\/a> also supported by chemicals giant BASF, battery maker Samsung SDI and a development agency, which seeks to improve working conditions for cobalt miners in Congo.<\/p>\n<p>The company expects demand for battery metals to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/tesla-warns-upcoming-battery-minerals-shortage\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"grow 10-fold by 2025 (opens in a new tab)\">grow 10-fold by 2025<\/a>, which may trigger an&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/electric-cars-dreams-may-shattered-2050-lack-cobalt-lithium-supplies\/\" >upcoming global shortage<\/a>&nbsp;of those minerals<\/p>\n<p>Other carmakers, including Ford and<br \/>\nVolkswagen, recently joined a separate initiative, the Responsible Sourcing<br \/>\nBlockchain Network (RSBN).
