{"id":1156944,"date":"2019-12-22T10:00:46","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T16:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1009892"},"modified":"2019-12-22T10:00:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T16:00:46","slug":"protests-in-argentina-following-modification-of-mining-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1156944","title":{"rendered":"Protests in Argentina following modification of mining law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of protests took place this weekend in Argentina\u2019s central province <g class=\"gr_ gr_15 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"15\" data-gr-id=\"15\">of M<\/g>endoza, following the approval of a new version of Law 7722, which restricted the use of dangerous chemicals in mining operations.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The provincial legislature greenlighted the modification of the law with 36 votes in favour, 11 against, one abstention and one absence in the lower chamber, and 28 votes in favour and 7 against in the upper chamber. The proposal was presented by Mendoza\u2019s governor Rodolfo Su\u00e1rez. <\/p>\n<p>The modified law allows for the use of cyanide and sulfuric acid in mining activities but forbids the use of mercury. There were also rallies in the southern cities of San Rafael and General Alvear.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, other towns such as Malarg\u00fce in the southwest didn\u2019t see any protests and when asked by local media, many citizens expressed support to the new Law 7722. This is the only area of the province where a mining project received the necessary approvals to go ahead this year, namely the Hierro Indio iron ore project owned by Alto Am\u00e9ricas.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza has 19 mining proposals waiting for approval.
