href=\"https:\/\/www.barrick.com\/English\/news\/news-details\/2019\/Conversion-of-Pueblo-Viejo-Power-Plant-Scheduled-for-Q1-2020\/default.aspx\" >said on Tuesday<\/a> that its Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic will receive its first natural gas in the first three months of the year as it seeks to lower greenhouse gas emissions and cut costs.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center d-xs-block d-sm-block d-md-none'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Barrick president and chief executive, Mark Bristow, said that since the commissioning of the Quisqueya I power plant in 2013, Pueblo Viejo has looked for ways to reduce its environmental impact as well as the cost of energy production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conversion of Quisqueya I to natural gas will help reduce Pueblo Viejo\u2019s power generation costs by some 30%,\u201d Bristow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrick.com\/English\/news\/news-details\/2019\/Conversion-of-Pueblo-Viejo-Power-Plant-Scheduled-for-Q1-2020\/default.aspx\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said in the statement<\/a>. \u201cGreenhouse gases will also be cut by 30% and nitrogen oxide by 85%, and the mine\u2019s dependence on oil will be significantly decreased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gold giant said in May that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/barrick-gold-mulls-1b-expansion-pueblo-viejo-mine\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">considering a $1 billion expansion<\/a> of the mine, a 60-40 joint venture with Newmont Goldcorp (NYSE: NEM)(TSX: NGT).<\/p>\n<p>The project, which includes expanding the operation\u2019s<br \/>\ntailings capacity, has the potential to extend the life of the mine into the<br \/>\n2030s and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Barrick considers Pueblo Viejo a \u201ctier one\u201d asset, which it<br \/>\ndefines as a mine with a projected life of more than 10 years and production,<br \/>\nas of 2017, of at least 500,000 ounces of gold.<\/p>\n<p>Located nearly 100 kilometres (about 60 miles) northwest of<br \/>\nDominican Republic\u2019s capital Santo Domingo, the mine began production in 2012.<br \/>\nLast year, it churned out 581,000 ounces of gold at an all-in sustaining cost<br \/>\n(AISC) of $623 an ounce in 2018 and is forecast to produce 550,000 to 600,000<br \/>\nounces this year at an AISC of $610-$650 an
