It also provides<br \/>\npractical tools to support companies with implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffective grievance mechanisms are a key part of a<br \/>\ncompany\u2019s responsibility to respect human rights and can benefit both the<br \/>\ncompany and host community by providing channels for resolving issues and<br \/>\nbuilding trust,\u201d ICMM chief executive, Tom Butler, said.<\/p>\n<p>The document\u2019s release on Human Rights Day, which commemorates<br \/>\nthe day, in 1948, on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the<br \/>\nUniversal Declaration of Human Rights is not coincidental.<\/p>\n<p>The upgraded guidance integrates the eight effectiveness<br \/>\ncriteria of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>It aim at reinforcing miners\u2019 commitment to environmental<br \/>\nand social governance (ESG), which according to consultancy McKinsey, influence<br \/>\nabout a quarter of global funds\u2019 decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an industry with a checkered history of accidents, environmental disasters and eye-watering corruption scandals, is seems that the balance is finally starting to tip in favour of \u2018good\u2019 ESG,\u201d Jonathan Brooks, head of Mining and Metals at European law firm&nbsp;Fieldfisher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investmenteurope.net\/opinion\/4003024\/dig-legitimacy-case-esg-mining\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">recently wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Miners have been taking note.
