{"id":1154294,"date":"2019-12-08T12:12:24","date_gmt":"2019-12-08T18:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1008738"},"modified":"2019-12-08T12:12:24","modified_gmt":"2019-12-08T18:12:24","slug":"australian-labor-mayor-slams-partys-lack-of-support-for-mineworkers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1154294","title":{"rendered":"Australian Labor mayor slams party\u2019s lack of support for mineworkers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jenny Hill, the Labor Mayor of Townsville in the state of Queensland, northeastern Australia, slammed her own party this weekend saying that its lack of support for coal mining is pushing people towards right-wing political organizations.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>At a conference held by a Labor think tank, Hill said that at the federal level, the centre-left Labor Party has not provided answers to the problems in north and central Queensland where mine workers are experiencing hard times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis term, over the last four years, we have been adamant: we support Adani. The reason for that is when you have a youth \u00adunemployment rate of 21 per cent at one point, and 13 per cent unemployment, particularly after the closure of Queensland Nickel, you have a community that is crying out for support,\u201d Hill said at the event, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/nation\/mayor-mps-tell-labor-to-stand-up-for-coal-jobs\/news-story\/fa02fcc2b198641d59486e2ed7a68fb1\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Australian (opens in a new tab)\">The Australian<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the mayor\u2019s view, the lack of support from her party to Adani\u2019s Carmichael coal mine in central Queensland -whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/adani-begins-construction-at-carmichael-coal-complex\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"approval (opens in a new tab)\">approval<\/a> went through this year after almost a decade of negotiations- is caused by the influence of the \u201canti-worker\u201d and \u201cdisruptive\u201d Labor Environment Action Network LEAN.<\/p>\n<p>Formed by a faction of Labor members\u00ad that campaigns on environmental issues, LEAN successfully lobbied for at the party&#8217;s national conference to keep a 45 per cent emissions \u00adreduction target and a 50 per cent renewables target.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, for Hill, there has to be a balance between such objectives and Australia\u2019s support for the mining industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She reminded the audience that modern life would not be possible without the responsible extraction of Earth\u2019s minerals. \u201cSomeone has got to mine it, someone has got to refine it and I would rather it be done in Australia than overseas.
