{"id":1153480,"date":"2019-12-04T12:58:28","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T18:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1008435"},"modified":"2019-12-04T12:58:28","modified_gmt":"2019-12-04T18:58:28","slug":"first-cobalt-on-track-for-2020-refinery-restart-with-glencore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1153480","title":{"rendered":"First Cobalt on track for 2020 refinery restart with Glencore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s First  Cobalt (TSX-V:FCC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstcobalt.com\/investors\/news\/first-cobalt-provides-update-on-refinery-feasibility-study\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"released an update Wednesday (opens in a new tab)\">released an update Wednesday<\/a> on the progress of recommissioning its cobalt refinery in partnership with Glencore (LON:GLEN). <\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The mining  and commodities trader giant is lending  First Cobalt an&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/glencore-and-first-cobalt-sign-definitive-agreement-822177890.html\" >initial $5 million&nbsp;to restart the company\u2019s refinery in Ontario<\/a>, which would&nbsp;become the only primary producer of refined cobalt for the electric vehicle (EV) market in North America. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/glencore-commits-45-million-to-restart-first-cobalt-refinery-in-canada\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Glencore said in August (opens in a new tab)\">Glencore said in August<\/a> that once a definitive feasibility study for a planned expansion is completed, which is expected to happen in early 2020, it would invest another $40 million&nbsp;into recommissioning and expanding the refinery, located 600 km from the US border <\/p>\n<p>First Cobalt  says it is on schedule for Q1 2020 completion&nbsp;of a prefeasibility study for a 12 tonnes per day restart and a second definitive feasibility study for a 55  tonnes per day  expansion scenario in the second half of 2021. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Glencore as our partner, our intention is to bring a reliable source of ethical cobalt to North America in 2020&#8217;s,&#8221; said Trent Mell, the company\u2019s president and CEO.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;With Glencore as our partner, our intention is to bring a reliable source of ethical cobalt to North America in 2020\u201d <\/p>\n<p><cite> Trent Mell, First Cobalt CEO<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Based on a scoping study released earlier this year, the capital cost of expanding the First Cobalt refinery to 55 t\/d came in at $37.5 million. An estimated 25,000 tonnes per year of battery grade cobalt sulfate could be produced.<\/p>\n<p>The First Cobalt refinery is located in the Canadian cobalt camp in northern Ontario. It is the only permitted primary cobalt refinery in North America.<\/p>\n<p>At market close Wednesday, First Cobalt&#8217;s stock was up over 4% on the TSX-V.
