(<em>Image courtesy of Alrosa.<\/em>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even more intriguing is the manner in which the air space formed within the larger stone. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists at the Alrosa\u2019s Research and Development<br \/>\nGeological Enterprise have put forward various hypotheses of the origin of this<br \/>\ndiamond. To date, the most probable version is that both internal and external<br \/>\ndiamonds were formed at the same time, which is more than 800 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its complex structure, the Matryoshka diamond weighs<br \/>\nonly 0.62 carats (0.124 grams) and measures 4.8 x 4.9 x 2.8 mm. <\/p>\n<p>The internal cavity volume is 6 mm3 and the internal<br \/>\ncrystal\u2019s volume is 1.6 mm3 with an estimated weight of 0.02 carats (0.004<br \/>\ngrams). <\/p>\n<p>The inner diamond has a table shape and dimensions of<br \/>\n1.9\u00d72.1\u00d70.6 mm, Alrosa said.<\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I2_73z1HcHI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>Alrosa produced more than 43 million carats of diamonds in<br \/>\n2018 from its Russian mines, or about 27% of the world\u2019s total.
