{"id":1150317,"date":"2019-11-18T07:55:01","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T13:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1007071"},"modified":"2019-11-18T07:55:01","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T13:55:01","slug":"anglogold-ashanti-halts-guinea-mine-over-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1150317","title":{"rendered":"AngloGold Ashanti halts Guinea mine over protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s AngloGold Ashanti<br \/>\n(JSE:ANG) (NYSE:AU), the world\u2019s third-biggest producer of the precious metal,<br \/>\nhas halted operations at its Siguiri&nbsp;mine in Guinea after protesters<br \/>\ninvaded the site on Friday, demanding the paving of a road.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The miner\u2019s local subsidiary, Soci\u00e9t\u00e9<br \/>\naurif\u00e8re de Guin\u00e9e (SAG), said the measure was taken after members of the Fatoyah<br \/>\ncommunity occupied the mine facilities and built barricades, disrupting production.<\/p>\n<p>Locals claim the company has not fulfilled<br \/>\nits promise to tar a 30 km (18.6 mile) road linking the towns of Siguiri and Kintinian,<br \/>\nbut AngloGold says the project, carried out in partnership with the Guinean<br \/>\ngovernment, has already been completed.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson Stewart Bailey added<br \/>\nthe company was in talks with community leaders to resolve the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Protests and mine invasions are not<br \/>\nforeign to AngloGold. Last year, production at Siguiri was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/anglogolds-guinea-mine-resumes-operations-one-day-strike\/\">stopped<br \/>\nfor a day<\/a> as a result of a workers\u2019 strike. While the action did not impact<br \/>\nfull-year production, output at the mine was negatively impacted by a 16%<br \/>\ndecrease in ore grades and an 11% fall in tonnes due to delays in the<br \/>\ncommissioning of the carbon-in-leach (CIL) combination plant. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, Siguiri produced<br \/>\n242,000 ounces (6.9 tonnes) of gold last year.<\/p>\n<p>The socio-economic challenges of<br \/>\npoverty and unemployment in Guinea lead to frequent community upheaval related<br \/>\nto demands for employment, electricity and land access. <\/p>\n<p>In the past fiscal year, locals<br \/>\ndemanded AngloGold to provide them with access to inactive pits, which led to<br \/>\nvarious incidents, including invasion of the marginal stockpile. <\/p>\n<p>The incidents were managed without<br \/>\nany significant conflict taking place, the company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aga-reports.com\/18\/download\/AGA-OP18-siguiri.pdf\">noted in an<br \/>\noperational profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AngloGold Ashanti runs the Siguiri<br \/>\neconomic development programme (SEDP), which focuses on agricultural, skills<br \/>\nand enterprise development projects aimed at
