{"id":1149781,"date":"2019-11-14T05:21:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T11:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1006816"},"modified":"2019-11-14T05:21:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T11:21:36","slug":"bhps-incoming-ceo-a-much-needed-breeze-of-fresh-air-for-the-mining-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1149781","title":{"rendered":"BHP\u2019s incoming CEO a much needed breeze of fresh air for the mining industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Less than 24 hours after BHP (ASX, LON, NYSE: BHP) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/bhp-names-mike-henry-as-new-ceo\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">named Canadian Mike Henry<\/a> as the company\u2019s new chief executive and executive director, praise from different industry actors and analysts keeps flowing in.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cEthical\u201d, \u201cthoughtful\u201d, \u201cgender-equality<br \/>\nchampion\u201d, are just some of the adjectives thrown at Henry, 53, who will assume<br \/>\nthe top position at the world\u2019s biggest miner in January 1, 2020, replacing<br \/>\nAndrew Mackenzie.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An industry veteran with 30 years of<br \/>\nexperience in the sector, including 16 at BHP, Henry represents a much needed breeze<br \/>\nof fresh air in the mining industry.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond advocating for \u201cperformance and improvement\u201d, what he told reporters Thursday was his main focus, Henry is expected to steer BHP towards becoming the company the world truly needs now\u2014 environmentally sound, gender-inclusive, local communities-respectful and supportive kind of miner.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If our communities don\u2019t trust us or don\u2019t feel they benefit from our presence, we eventually lose our ability to operate there \u2014 and rightly so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><cite>Mike Henry,  BHP&#8217;s new chief executive and executive director.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSocial value is not an elective for<br \/>\nthis company,\u201d Henry \u2014 who is also a former chief marketing officer \u2014&nbsp; declared following the announcement of his<br \/>\nnew role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt BHP we know that if our communities don\u2019t trust us or don\u2019t feel they benefit from our presence, we eventually lose our ability to operate there \u2014 and rightly so,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bhp\/status\/1002040521861169152\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said last year at an industry forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds too good to be true. It<br \/>\nalso seems like a lot of pressure and expectations for just one person. The<br \/>\nkey, analysts say, would be for Henry to surround himself by the right people. <\/p>\n<p>The upcoming chief has already said<br \/>\nhe\u2019d be touring BHP\u2019s global operations for the rest of the year before setting<br \/>\nout proposals for \u201cstrategy shifts\u201d and \u201cpossible changes to the team of top<br \/>\nexecutives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a concept, this is what<br \/>\nshareholders want &#8212; efficiencies and improvements,\u201d said Craig Evans, a<br \/>\nSydney-based portfolio manager at Tribeca Investments Partners Pty. \u201cIt\u2019s going<br \/>\nto be a big focus for everybody, and it would be good to see how he thinks that<br \/>\ncan be implemented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He leads by example,\u201d a<br \/>\nformer colleague who worked with Henry for several years said. \u201cHe doesn&#8217;t play<br \/>\ngames and for a guy in that position, he has his ego totally in check,&#8221;
