{"id":1148406,"date":"2019-11-06T16:00:09","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T22:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1006215"},"modified":"2019-11-06T16:00:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T22:00:09","slug":"responsible-sourcing-blockchain-network-for-minerals-moves-closer-to-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1148406","title":{"rendered":"Responsible sourcing blockchain network for minerals moves closer to production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN), a blockchain network committed to strengthening human rights and environmental protection in mineral supply chains, announced Wednesday that its digital supply chain for cobalt has moved beyond pilot phase and is progressing toward use in live production computing environments starting in spring 2020.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> The pilot succeeded in linking each phase of the supply chain from mine to original equipment manufacturer (OEM), RSBN said in a media statement. <\/p>\n<p>Built on the IBM Blockchain Platform and assured by RCS Global Group, RSBN will have continued participation from founding members including Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen Group, LG Chem and Huayou Cobalt.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p> RSBN and its participants are building an open, industrywide blockchain platform to trace responsibly produced minerals from source through to end product<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>RSBN also announced that starting Wednesday,<br \/>\nVolvo Cars will join the network as its newest member with further partners<br \/>\nfrom the auto, tech and mining sectors expected to join this year.<\/p>\n<p>RSBN and its participants are building an<br \/>\nopen, industrywide blockchain platform to trace responsibly produced minerals<br \/>\nfrom source through to end product, with RCS Global assessing each<br \/>\nparticipating entity against responsible sourcing requirements set by the<br \/>\nOrganization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and industry<br \/>\nbodies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>We are setting in motion a process of mainstreaming responsible sourcing practices across major industries,\u201d said Dr. Nicholas Garrett, CEO of RCS Global Group. \u201cWe\u2019ve reached significant new milestones as we\u2019ve moved beyond testing, proving the merits of this coupled technology and assurance model can extend to a wide range of participants across every tier of the supply chain and to other minerals.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In initial testing, the RSBN blockchain demonstrated<br \/>\nhow cobalt produced at Huayou\u2019s industrial mine site in the Democratic Republic<br \/>\nof Congo (DRC) could be traced through the supply chain to LG Chem\u2019s cathode<br \/>\nand battery plant in South Korea, and then to its final destination, a Ford<br \/>\nplant in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>An immutable audit trail captured on the<br \/>\nplatform delivered corresponding data providing documentation for the initial<br \/>\nethical cobalt production, its maintenance and its ethical provenance from mine<br \/>\nto end manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>The next move is expansion into other<br \/>\nbattery metals, including lithium and nickel, the platform is also actively<br \/>\nworking to progress the solution to support tracing other common metals<br \/>\nincluding tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold, also known as 3TG.
