Kaunda, who created the park<br \/>\nduring his 27 years in office, said the Kangaluwi copper project posed \u201cthe<br \/>\nbiggest threat in history to the wildlife and pristine wilderness that has<br \/>\nsurvived so many centuries of challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Tourism and Arts, Ronald Chitotela, said the park will remain closed to mining until the country\u2019s environmental regulator completes a fresh report on the potential impacts of extractive activities in the area. The last study, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lusakatimes.com\/2019\/11\/06\/there-will-be-no-mining-in-the-lower-zambezi-kalabas-rejection-of-zema-report-was-not-a-cabinet-decision\/\" ><em>Lukasa Times<\/em> reports<\/a>, expired in 2017. <\/p>\n<p>The plan to create a mine in the park, 174km (108 miles) south-east of the capital, Lusaka, has faced relentless opposition.
