{"id":1147884,"date":"2019-11-04T12:10:41","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T18:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1005985"},"modified":"2019-11-04T12:10:41","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T18:10:41","slug":"bolivia-walks-away-from-lithium-project-with-german-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1147884","title":{"rendered":"Bolivia walks away from lithium project with German company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bolivia\u2019s government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.abi.bo\/abi_\/?i=438845&amp;k=20181024046a\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">cancelled a joint venture project<\/a> with Germany&#8217;s privately owned ACI Systems Alemania (ACISA), which was seeking to develop a massive lithium project in the country\u2019s southern highlands.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Residents of Potos\u00ed, where the partners had <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/germany-secures-access-worlds-second-largest-lithium-deposit\/\" >planned to build a factory for electric vehicles (EVs) batteries and a lithium hydroxide plant<\/a>,&nbsp;have been protesting since early October against the project.&nbsp;They claimed the region was not getting enough benefits from the deal and demanded authorities to raise the agreed 3% royalty to 11%, Spanish news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efe.com\/efe\/america\/sociedad\/una-region-boliviana-se-moviliza-para-exigir-mas-beneficios-por-el-litio\/20000013-4081513\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">EFE reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Potos\u00ed authorities said the decision&nbsp;followed a decree emitted<br \/>\nby President Evo Morales over the weekend in which he overturned a previous order<br \/>\npermitting the $250 million lithium operation.<\/p>\n<p>Based in Zimmern ob Rottweil, a rural village at the heart of Germany\u2019s Black Forest, ACISA is a subsidiary of&nbsp;ACI Group, which provides project-management support to the photovoltaic, battery and automotive industries. <\/p>\n<p>The company, which employs about 20 people, was created solely to focus on building the now botched lithium mine in the Salar de Uyuni and had committed a $1.3 billion investment.<\/p>\n<p>Demand for the white mineral is expected to more than double<br \/>\nby 2025. The soft, light commodity is mined mainly in Australia, Chile and<br \/>\nArgentina.<\/p>\n<p>Bolivia is sitting on the&nbsp;second-largest reserve,<br \/>\nestimated in nine million tonnes, or around 25% of the world\u2019s known reserves.<br \/>\nBut so far it has done nothing with it.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium contained in Bolivian salt flats are higher in<br \/>\naltitude, not as dry, and contain more magnesium (Mg) and potassium than in<br \/>\nneighbouring Chile and Argentina, making the extraction process much more<br \/>\ncomplicated and costly.<\/p>\n<p>Uyuni\u2019s higher rainfall and cooler climate mean that its<br \/>\nevaporation rate is not even half that of Chile\u2019s Salar de Atacama, where brine<br \/>\nponds evaporate quickly.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of infrastructure and investor confidence in the Bolivian government are other issues negatively affecting Morales&#8217;
