{"id":1146961,"date":"2019-10-31T07:48:10","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T13:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1005744"},"modified":"2019-10-31T07:48:10","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T13:48:10","slug":"petra-diamonds-opens-tailings-to-artisanal-miners-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1146961","title":{"rendered":"Petra Diamonds opens tailings to artisanal miners in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s Petra Diamonds (LON:PDL) is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/ir.q4europe.com\/Tools\/newsArticleHTML.aspx?solutionID=3144&amp;customerKey=PetraDiamonds&amp;storyID=14496119\" >opening up some of its tailings at Koffiefontein<\/a> mine to small scale operators, in an effort to tackle illegal activities and solve some issues cause by artisanal miners.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Petra believes that there is a space for artisanal small scale miners to co-exist with formalized, large-scale mining, since ASM can often profitably recover diamonds from resources that would be unprofitable, or at best marginal, for a larger operator due to the capital and overhead costs involved,&#8221; the company said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Petra believes there is space for artisanal small-scale miners to co-exist with formalized, large-scale mining.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The initiative, the diamond miner<br \/>\nsaid, comes after extensive consultation and cooperation with relevant<br \/>\nshareholders. Those include South Africa\u2019s Department of Mineral Resources and<br \/>\nEnergy (DMR&amp;E) as mining sector regulator, the Letsemeng Local Municipality<br \/>\nas elected representatives of the community, and the community itself.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Petra allows<br \/>\nartisanal miners to use its tailings. It previously carried out a similar<br \/>\nexercise at Kimberley, in Northern Cape, where small scale miners to operate<br \/>\n\u201cthe floors\u201d of the property \u2014 an area previously worked by Kimberley\u2019s<br \/>\nfounding miners.<\/p>\n<p>That project, kicked off in 2017, wasn\u2019t a complete success. Its then joint venture partner, Ekapa Mining reported a year later it was still spending R3 million (about $198,000) a month in security to keeping individual out of its operating boundaries. Petra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/petra-diamonds-sells-stake-kimberley-ekapa-jv-22-million\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">sold its stake in the Ekapa partnership<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Applying lessons learned at Kimberly, Petra intends to help regulate artisanal miners so that they would comply with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and other global standards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We regard this initiative as yet another milestone in the Petra legacy and we welcome the Koffiefontein Community Mining Primary Cooperative as partners in our industry to complement our own operations and extract optimal benefit from the diamond reserves in Koffiefontein,&#8221;
