{"id":1146697,"date":"2019-10-30T10:40:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T16:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1005617"},"modified":"2019-10-30T10:40:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T16:40:22","slug":"peru-lets-southern-copper-keep-building-1-4bn-tia-maria-copper-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1146697","title":{"rendered":"Peru lets Southern Copper keep building $1.4bn Tia Maria copper mine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Peruvian government <a href=\"https:\/\/peru21.pe\/politica\/tia-maria-consejo-de-mineria-declaro-infundado-el-recurso-de-revision-presentado-contra-el-proyecto-minero-noticia\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">confirmed on Wednesday<\/a> it had given Southern Copper (NYSE:SCCO) permission to resume construction at its $1.4 billion Tia Maria project, in the southern Islay province of the Arequipa region.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The world\u2019s fifth largest copper producer by output <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/peruvian-government-suspends-southerns-construction-licence-for-tia-maria-project\/\" >had to cancel work in August<\/a>, after authorities suspended the construction\u00a0licence\u00a0to evaluate objections from residents and regional authorities related to where the plant would be built.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>The mine is expected to produce 120,000 tonnes of copper a year for an estimated 20-year lifespan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Southern Copper, a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, has experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/southern-copper-resume-tia-maria-project-peru-permit-imminent\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">several setbacks<\/a> since it first announced its intention to develop T\u00eda Mar\u00eda in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The construction plan has been&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/web\/southern-copper-says-legal-dispute-perus-tia-maria-resolved\/\" >halted and readjusted twice<\/a>, in 2011 and 2015,&nbsp;due to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/southern-copper-faces-fresh-opposition-to-billion-dollar-project-in-peru\/\" >fierce opposition by locals<\/a> who are worried about its environmental impacts and the possibility of an open-pit mine damaging crops and water supplies.<\/p>\n<p>In July, residents of Valle del Tambo, the closest town to<br \/>\nthe T\u00eda Mar\u00eda site, staged weeks-long protests and carried out a general strike<br \/>\nto express their rejection of the project. They were later joined by a number<br \/>\nof regional unions.<\/p>\n<p>Southern executives, however,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/tia-maria-copper-project-gaining-legitimacy-exec\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are hopeful<\/a>&nbsp;that the project will be developed by<br \/>\n2020.
