{"id":1145642,"date":"2019-10-24T08:20:08","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T13:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1005042"},"modified":"2019-10-24T08:20:08","modified_gmt":"2019-10-24T13:20:08","slug":"rare-earths-to-be-extracted-at-former-coal-mine-in-illinois","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1145642","title":{"rendered":"Rare earths to be extracted at former coal mine in Illinois"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto-based Avalon Advanced Materials (TSX: AVL) signed a binding Letter of Intent with Coal Strategy Advisors (CSA) to earn up to a 50% interest in the Will Scarlett rare earths recovery project, located near Marion, Illinois.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Will Scarlett is a closed coal mine site where, according to Avalon, recent geochemical sampling has found elevated levels of rare earth elements and other metallic elements such as cobalt, nickel, lithium, manganese and zinc in mine waste materials.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Unlike most <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">hardrock<\/g> rare earth resources, no significant uranium or thorium has been detected associated with the rare <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">earths<\/g> at Will Scarlett<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In a press release, the Canadian miner explained that the rare <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">earths<\/g> are found at Will Scarlett in the acid mine drainage and in the precipitates generated from lime treatment of the AMD to neutralize the acidity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Avalon reports that sampling of the precipitates and acid mine drainage has revealed high concentrations of total rare earth oxides in excess of 500 ppm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Avalon and CSA plan to proceed immediately with analytical and process test work to confirm concentration levels and the most efficient extraction process to recover the rare earths from the AMD and precipitates,&#8221; the media brief states. &#8220;Initial analytical test work is already in progress.
