{"id":1145191,"date":"2019-10-22T11:53:31","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T16:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1004896"},"modified":"2019-10-22T11:53:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T16:53:31","slug":"health-and-safety-bigger-risks-to-human-rights-than-conflict-minerals-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1145191","title":{"rendered":"Health and safety bigger risks to human rights than conflict minerals \u2014 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Risks related to occupational health<br \/>\nand safety are more prevalent than human rights abuses and conflict financing<br \/>\namong global artisanal and small-scale&nbsp;miners (ASM), a new study by German<br \/>\nsupply chain auditor RCS Global Group has found.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The group\u2019s Better Mining platform, piloted as \u2018Better Cobalt\u2019 on a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/ford-lead-blockchain-pilot-trace-cobalt-mined-congo\/\" >cobalt supply chain from the Democratic Republic of Congo<\/a> (DRC) revealed that 26% of all registered incidents in the past year were related to health and safety issues, while only 13% had to do rights abuses and minerals financing conflict.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Data came from five separate artisanal and small-scale&nbsp;mining sites in the DRC and Rwanda.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Berlin-based organization used mobile technology to gather data from from five separate ASM sites in DRC and Rwanda, focusing on informal and small miners digging for cobalt, copper and the so-called 3TG (gold, tin, tantalum and tungsten).<\/p>\n<p>A sophisticated methodology<br \/>\nco-developed with the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) was later applied to<br \/>\ncalculates risk levels based on incident and context data. <\/p>\n<p>Since January, deployment of the Better Mining platform, which includes a risk mitigation monitoring process, had led to a reduction in overall risk levels at four out of the five mine sites in the sample, the group says.<\/p>\n<p>The complete eradication of child<br \/>\nlabour, however, remains challenging due to the difficulty of controlling<br \/>\naccess to mines in large, remote areas, it notes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Proportion-of-registered-incidents-by-risk-category-DRC.jpg\" alt=\"Health and safety bigger risks to human rights than conflict minerals \u2014 report\" class=\"wp-image-1004900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Proportion-of-registered-incidents-by-risk-category-DRC.jpg 978w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Proportion-of-registered-incidents-by-risk-category-DRC-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Proportion-of-registered-incidents-by-risk-category-DRC-768x426.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 978px) 100vw, 978px\" \/><figcaption><em>Taken from: Saving the EV revolution: Better Mining | RCS Global Group.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The idea is to sell the solution to<br \/>\ncompanies willing to ensure their raw materials don\u2019t come from mines that use<br \/>\nchild labour or fund warlords or corrupt soldiers, RCS Global Group says.<\/p>\n<p>One of its clients is Volvo Cars, the first global brand to actively use Better Mining data.
