{"id":1143453,"date":"2019-10-11T08:06:35","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T13:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1004197"},"modified":"2019-10-11T08:06:35","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T13:06:35","slug":"sirius-inks-fertilizer-supply-deal-with-qatars-muntajat-amid-moors-project-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1143453","title":{"rendered":"Sirius inks fertilizer supply deal with Qatar\u2019s Muntajat amid Moors project worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Troubled potash mine developer Sirius Minerals (LON:SXX) has entered into a <a href=\"https:\/\/otp.tools.investis.com\/clients\/uk\/sirius_minerals\/rns\/regulatory-story.aspx?cid=485&amp;newsid=1336070&amp;culture=en-GB\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">ten-year supply and distribution agreement<\/a> with Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company (Muntajat) amid doubts about the fate of its ambitious mining project in Britain\u2019s Moors National Park.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The deal secures distribution of POLY4, the company\u2019s Woodsmith<br \/>\nproject output, into&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;(except&nbsp;Nigeria&nbsp;and&nbsp;Egypt),&nbsp;Australia,&nbsp;New<br \/>\nZealand&nbsp;and certain remaining Middle-Eastern and Asian territories, Sirius<br \/>\nsaid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The future of the company and its huge fertilizer project beneath the park were thrown into doubt last month, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/sirius-minerals-shares-crash-after-scrapping-500m-fundraising-plan\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Sirius\u2019 $3.8 billion funding plan failed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the mine developer had to let go about 300<br \/>\nworkers in ore der to slash costs and preserve cash while it carries out a strategic<br \/>\nreview of the project and alternative funding options for it.<\/p>\n<p>The Woodsmith mine, poised to be<br \/>\none of the world\u2019s largest in terms of the amount of resources&nbsp;extracted,<br \/>\nis set to generate an initial 10 million tonnes per year of polyhalite, a form<br \/>\nof potash that is used in plant fertilizers. Output is forecast to reach 13<br \/>\nmillion tonnes in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The operation involves sinking<br \/>\ntwo 1.5km shafts below a national park on the North York Moors and is expected<br \/>\nto create about 1,800 jobs during construction, as well as 1,000 permanent<br \/>\npositions once it opens in May 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The ore will be extracted via the<br \/>\ntwo mine shafts and transported to Teesside on the world\u2019s longest underground<br \/>\nconveyor belt, via a 37km-underground tunnel.
