{"id":1140318,"date":"2019-09-25T12:24:35","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T17:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1002844"},"modified":"2019-09-25T12:24:35","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T17:24:35","slug":"savannah-resources-to-extract-quartz-glass-making-ceramic-at-lithium-mine-in-portugal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1140318","title":{"rendered":"Savannah Resources to extract quartz, glass-making ceramic at lithium mine in Portugal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multi-commodity developer&nbsp;Savannah Resources<br \/>\n(AIM:SAV)&nbsp;is looking into maximizing value at its Mina do Barroso lithium<br \/>\nproject in Portugal&nbsp;by identifying other products present in the<br \/>\nconcession. <\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unveiling a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savannahresources.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Significant-Maiden-Co-Product-Mineral-Resource-Estimate-25.9.19.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">maiden resource for elements other than lithium<\/a>, the London, England-based company said that the Grandao deposit, which is part of its lithium project, contains 4.79 million tonnes of quartz and 6.11 million tonnes of feldspar.<\/p>\n<p>The co-products can be used in industries such as glass-making and ceramics, Savannah said, generating &#8220;significant&#8221; extra income for the company.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Co-products will initially be sold to ceramics industry customers in Portugal and in neighbouring and Spain. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;They will not only help our bottom line but will help to reduce the volumes of materials that will need to be emplaced as waste on site thereby reducing our environmental footprint and costs,\u201d chief executive, David Archer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savannahresources.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Significant-Maiden-Co-Product-Mineral-Resource-Estimate-25.9.19.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said in the statement<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mina do Barroso, arguably one of the most advanced lithium<br \/>\nmining concessions in Europe, is expected to become the continent\u2019s first<br \/>\nsignificant producer of spodumene, a hard-rock form of lithium.<\/p>\n<p>Savannah, which acquired a majority stake in the project in<br \/>\nMay 2017, has maintained a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/savannah-resources-enters-lithium-race-europe\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fast paced development approach<\/a>&nbsp;since.<\/p>\n<p>The company estimates the whole project, in northern Portugal, holds a resource estimate of 20 million tonnes with over 200,000 tonnes contained Li20.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, metallurgical test-work results have produced an \u201cexcellent\u201d 6% Li20 low impurity concentrate, which&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/europes-push-evs-boon-savannahs-portugal-lithium-project\/\" >according to Archer<\/a>, is \u201cideal\u201d for the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/europe-spend-billions-lithium-ion-battery-plants\/\" >EV battery industry<\/a>, further validating the project.<\/p>\n<p>Mina do Barroso open pit mine is set to initially produce 6% Li2O spodumene concentrates destined to China. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/savannahresources-mina-do-barroso-location.jpg\" alt=\"Savannah Resources to extract quartz, glass-making ceramic at lithium mine in Portugal\" class=\"wp-image-1002849\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/savannahresources-mina-do-barroso-location.jpg 899w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/savannahresources-mina-do-barroso-location-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/savannahresources-mina-do-barroso-location-768x455.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><figcaption>Mina do Barroso lithium project location.
