{"id":1140240,"date":"2019-09-25T04:38:19","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T09:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1002818"},"modified":"2019-09-25T04:38:19","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T09:38:19","slug":"sibanye-to-axe-more-than-5000-jobs-in-marikana-restructuring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1140240","title":{"rendered":"Sibanye to axe more than 5,000 jobs in Marikana restructuring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s Sibanye-Stillwater (JSE:SGL) (NYSE:SBGL) is <a href=\"https:\/\/thevault.exchange\/?get_group_doc=245\/1569395996-sibanye-stillwater-section-189-consultation-at-marikana-operation-25Sep2019.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">letting go 5,270 workers<\/a> at its Marikana platinum mine, as the company restructures the loss-making operation.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Johannesburg-based precious metals miner, which took possession of Marikana through a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/sibanye-lonmin-create-worlds-no-2-platinum-producer-merger-approved-shareholders\/\" >recent merger with struggling rival Lonmin<\/a>, said the goal was to return the mine to profit and ensure the sustainability of the remaining shafts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Precious metals miner said that 3,904 were permanent positions, while 1,366 were contractors.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOverall, the outcome will be a more sustainable business which is able to secure employment for the majority of the Marikana workforce for a much longer period,\u201d he said in a statement,\u201d chief executive, Neal Froneman, <a href=\"https:\/\/thevault.exchange\/?get_group_doc=245\/1569395996-sibanye-stillwater-section-189-consultation-at-marikana-operation-25Sep2019.pdf\">said in a state<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thevault.exchange\/?get_group_doc=245\/1569395996-sibanye-stillwater-section-189-consultation-at-marikana-operation-25Sep2019.pdf\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"m (opens in a new tab)\">m<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thevault.exchange\/?get_group_doc=245\/1569395996-sibanye-stillwater-section-189-consultation-at-marikana-operation-25Sep2019.pdf\">ent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of jobs losses are significantly higher than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/south-africa-imposes-tough-conditions-sibanye-lonmin-deal\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">3,000 originally estimated<\/a> as a result of the Sibanye-Lonmin business combination, which created the world\u2019s largest platinum producer and the second-biggest palladium miner.<\/p>\n<p>The company, however, said the cuts<br \/>\nless than what Lonmin had communicated in 2017 and that they would be subject<br \/>\nto a consultation process aimed at mitigating retrenchments and seeking options<br \/>\nto the closure or downscaling of operations at the affected shafts.<\/p>\n<p>Job cuts&nbsp;in Africa&#8217;s most industrialized economy are politically&nbsp;sensitive, with the unemployment rate hitting&nbsp;a 11-year high of 29% in the second quarter of the year, affecting mostly poor, black workers. <\/p>\n<p>The Marikana mine, located near Rustenburg, about 112km from Johannesburg, was the scenario of an infamous workers massacre.
