{"id":1137571,"date":"2019-09-10T17:04:11","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T22:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1001584"},"modified":"2019-09-10T17:04:11","modified_gmt":"2019-09-10T22:04:11","slug":"nationwide-mine-strike-in-peru-called-a-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1137571","title":{"rendered":"Nationwide mine strike in Peru called \u201ca failure\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peru\u2019s National Federation of Mining Workers&#8217; call an indefinite strike in protest against the government\u2019s planned labour reform, got off to a slow start on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snmpe.org.pe\/prensa\/notas-de-prensa\/notas-de-prensa-de-la-snmpe\/5789-snmpe-fracaso-convocatoria-de-huelga-en-sector-minero.html\">called it a failure<\/a> saying that mines were operating normally across South American country. <\/p>\n<p>Similar action by unions in 2017 also had limited impact, but any prolonged disruption could affect metals markets given that Peru is the world\u2019s second-largest producer of\u00a0copper,\u00a0silver\u00a0and\u00a0zinc, fourth biggest lead producer and sixth-biggest gold and tin producer.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.miningintelligence.com\/country\/\">Mining Intelligence data<\/a> Peru&#8217;s copper production topped 2.4m tonnes last year while silver output exceeded 100m ounces. Zinc production was just over 1.3m tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Peru has a total of 123 producing mines and another six currently under construction.
