The 47% that rejected the bid <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">were<\/g> asking for a bonus of over $18,000, which was the union\u2019s initial proposal.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>No stoppage has ever taken place at the Zald\u00edvar operation<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The company also said that it will introduce new measures to improve the workers\u2019 quality of life, including educational and healthcare benefits.<\/p>\n<p>On August 23, 2019, 94% of Minera Zald\u00edvar\u2019s unionized workers rejected the company\u2019s first proposal and called for a general strike. In an official <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"communiqu\u00e9 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SSMLP1704\/status\/1167575238261071872?s=20\" >communiqu\u00e9<\/a>, they refused Antofagasta\u2019s arguments of lack of cash flow as an obstacle for accepting their suggested bonuses and salary increases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company reported revenues of $2.5 billion during the first semester of the year. Antofagasta Plc reported an income growth of 19% during the first half of 2019 thanks to increased gold and molybdenum production and prices, two subproducts that the Group commercializes. This way, it counteracted the 6% fall in copper prices,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cHowever, the company doesn\u2019t seem willing to negotiate, dismissing the chance to add value to its business through the different proposals presented by the union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the company was able to provide a middle ground and avoid a strike meant that Zald\u00edvar remains undefeated, as no stoppage has ever taken place at the quarter-century-old operation.<\/p>\n<p>The open-pit, heap-leach copper mine operated by Antofagasta Minerals is located some 175 <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">kilometres<\/g> south of the city of Antofagasta.
