The metal, a key ingredient in the batteries that power electric vehicles<br \/>\n(EVS) already has a special status as it\u2019s considered to be property of the<br \/>\nstate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeclaring the Special Contracts of Lithium Operation (CEOL) deals of national interest is what was declared unconstitutional,\u201d the minister of mining, Baldo Prokurica, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biobiochile.cl\/noticias\/nacional\/chile\/2019\/09\/02\/comision-de-constitucion-declara-inconstitucional-la-expropiacion-del-litio.shtml\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">told BioBio.cl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only special lithium operation contract Corfo has is one with Codelco.\u00a0Sometimes it is confused with the contracts that Corfo has with SQM or Albemarle, which are lease contracts,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Area-of-lithium-mining-between-1997-and-2017-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1000904\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Area-of-lithium-mining-between-1997-and-2017-.jpg 929w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Area-of-lithium-mining-between-1997-and-2017--300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Area-of-lithium-mining-between-1997-and-2017--768x551.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 929px) 100vw, 929px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Since assuming in 2018 as Chile\u2019s President, Sebastian Pi\u00f1era<br \/>\nhas vowed to ensure a combination of both state and private investment to<br \/>\ndouble the country\u2019s output to 230,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent<br \/>\nper year by 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Chile produced 96,053 tonnes of lithium last year. Demand from<br \/>\nEVs and energy storage systems is expected to triple by 2025, which many take as<br \/>\na sure sign of better process.<\/p>\n<p>Most analysts, however, remain unconvinced. Commodity research group (CRU) said this month it expected lithium prices to remain in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/lithium-prices-to-remain-low-as-hype-has-met-reality-cru\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">single digits for longer than expected<\/a>, as \u201chype\u201d has met \u201creality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\"
