{"id":1135663,"date":"2019-08-30T06:23:33","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T11:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1000695"},"modified":"2019-08-30T06:23:33","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T11:23:33","slug":"canada-injects-millions-into-evs-energy-efficient-mining-technology-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1135663","title":{"rendered":"Canada injects millions into EVs, energy-efficient mining technology projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s&nbsp;Minister of Natural Resources is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/natural-resources-canada\/news\/2019\/08\/canada-invests-in-energy-efficient-mining-technologies.html\" >investing C$2 million&nbsp;<\/a>(about $1.5m) in an&nbsp;initiative to develop an energy-efficient mining technology expected to reduce energy consumption at mine sites, cut costs and make remote operations more productive.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Canada Mining Innovation Council\u2019s project seeks to replace conventional crushers with technology that can reduce the crushing and grinding component of a mining site\u2019s energy consumption by up to 50%.<\/p>\n<p>Crushing and grinding rocks into smaller pieces is the most energy-consuming activity in a mining operation. <\/p>\n<p>The project, funded through Natural Resources Canada&#8217;s Clean Growth Program, allows to lower costs for that part of the mining process by 30%.<\/p>\n<p>The program is a C$155-million investment fund that helps emerging clean technologies further reduce their impacts on air, land and water, while enhancing competitiveness and creating jobs.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>EVs push<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Canadian government is also funding two electric vehicle<br \/>\n(EV) infrastructure projects in Quebec, run by Mogile Technologies.<\/p>\n<p>One of them is testing a method to allow utilities to<br \/>\n\u201cdynamically adjust power output and pricing\u201d at charging stations, based on<br \/>\npredicted load use.<\/p>\n<p>The second project will develop a single account for EV drivers to pay for the use of any charging station. That could improve the business model for charging infrastructure operators and make payment easier for drivers, Natural Resources Canada said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>EV adoption in Canada currently sits at around 3% of the total number of vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGetting more electric vehicles on the road is a practical<br \/>\nand effective way for Canadians to reduce pollution and&nbsp;fight climate<br \/>\nchange,\u201d minister Amarjeet Sohi said. <\/p>\n<p>EV adoption in Canada currently sits at around 3% of the<br \/>\ntotal number of vehicles, but as battery-fuelled cars get better, cheaper and<br \/>\nmore suited for the country&#8217;s climate, market analysts expect to see that<br \/>\nnumber climb quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has also committed $25.4 million (C$33.7m) in<br \/>\nnorthwestern Alberta&#8217;s first commercial-scale geothermal facility.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s goal is to demonstrate that geothermal power is<br \/>\na viable and reliable power source.
