{"id":1135528,"date":"2019-08-29T16:22:38","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T21:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=1000658"},"modified":"2019-08-29T16:22:38","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T21:22:38","slug":"glencores-massive-nsw-coal-project-gets-conditional-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1135528","title":{"rendered":"Glencore\u2019s massive NSW coal project gets conditional approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New South Wales government\u2019s Independent Planning Commission (IPC) has approved, with conditions, Glencore\u2019s A$381 million United&nbsp;Wambo&nbsp;coal project in the Australian state\u2019s Hunter Valley.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The United and&nbsp;Wambo&nbsp;coal mining operations were established in 1989 and the late 1960&#8217;s, respectively. There have been a range of underground and open cut coal mining operations at both since. <\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Peabody agreed to establish an unincorporated joint venture project with Glencore to combine the existing operations of the Wambo open-cut mine with the adjacent coal reserves of Glencore\u2019s United mine.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peabodyenergy.com\/Operations\/Australia-Mining\/New-South-Wales-Mining\/Wambo-Open-Cut-Mine\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"3.6 million tonnes of coal (opens in a new tab)\">3.6 million tonnes of coal<\/a> were sold from the Wambo open cut mine, resulting in A$950 million in direct and indirect economic benefits. <\/p>\n<p>But Glencore bowed to investor pressure when it pledged&nbsp;to limit coal production and align the business with Paris climate targets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The main customers for Wambo coal are in Japan, Korea and China.<\/p>\n<p>Now United&nbsp;Wambo&nbsp;plans to develop an&nbsp;open-cut&nbsp;mine producing up to 10 million tonnes per year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p> Joining the United and Wambo mines creates a \u2018super pit\u2019, with the ability to inject A$414 million into the New South Wales economy <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Glencore\u2019s United Collieries sought to integrate and expand open cut mining operations at the existing United&nbsp;Wambo&nbsp;to facilitate the extraction of an additional&nbsp;150-million&nbsp;tonnes&nbsp;of run-of-mine (ROM) coal over a 23- year period.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The United mine, under care and\u00a0maintenance and\u00a0Wambo\u00a0mine\u00a0are located about 16\u00a0kilometres\u00a0west of Singleton, and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ABC reported  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-08-29\/united-wambo-approved-with-paris-climate-agreement-conditions\/11460970\" >ABC reported <\/a>that joining the two creates a \u2018super pit,\u2019 with the ability to inject A$414 million into the New South Wales economy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After concluding the United Wambo project is &#8220;in the public interest,&#8221;
