&#8220;strategic&#8221; licences<\/a> to the end of 2021 and is considering a joint venture to develop those projects, in the country\u2019s Kalahari Desert.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex which cover just over 500 km2,&nbsp;are located west of the Ghaghoo diamond mine, which Gem Diamonds&nbsp;(LON:GEMD) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/gem-diamonds-exits-botswana-with-5-4m-ghaghoo-mine-sale\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">sold in June to local company Pro Civil for $5.4 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company has already<br \/>\nidentified prospective drill-ready targets through intensive work including<br \/>\naeromagnetic surveys, ground magnetic exploration, soil sampling and target<br \/>\nselection.<\/p>\n<p>Botswana Diamonds became the sole owner of the PL232 and PL235 licences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/botswana-diamonds-buys-alrosas-stake-sunland-minerals-joint-venture\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">in November last year<\/a>, after buying Russian diamond miner Alrosa\u2019s 50% stake&nbsp;in their Sunland Minerals joint venture (JV).<\/p>\n<p>Botswana, which was overtaken by<br \/>\nRussia as the world\u2019s top diamond producing country in 2014, is grappling with<br \/>\naging mines, as well as power and&nbsp;water shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the nation is home to some<br \/>\nof the world\u2019s most&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/de-beers-botswana-seek-fresh-expansion-worlds-richest-diamond-mine\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prolific diamond mines<\/a>, including Lucara Diamond\u2019s<br \/>\n(TSX:LUC) Karowe operation, where the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com\/worlds-second-largest-diamond-ever-found-named-our-light\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now-famous Lesedi la Rona<\/a>, the second-largest gem-quality<br \/>\ndiamond to ever be found, was unearthed in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Besides diamonds, the country also<br \/>\nproduces nickel, copper, coal and iron
