{"id":1133402,"date":"2019-08-19T13:50:09","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T18:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=999654"},"modified":"2019-08-19T13:50:09","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T18:50:09","slug":"bhp-outperforming-peers-in-terms-of-liquidity-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1133402","title":{"rendered":"BHP outperforming peers in terms of liquidity \u2014 report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Market research firm <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Fitch Solutions (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitchsolutions.com\/\" >Fitch Solutions<\/a> recently published a company outlook for BHP Billiton, weighing in on the company&#8217;s market-leading position in the mining industry.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According the report, the world&#8217;s largest miner has been able to stay ahead of the pack thanks to the quality and potential of its assets and projects, as well as the company&#8217;s marketing and diversification strategies.<\/p>\n<p>As a testament to its industry-leading status, BHP has consistently been able to generate higher cash flows than its competitors over recent years (see graph below).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-cash-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-999667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-cash-1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-cash-1-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-cash-1-768x440.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>In FY2018 the company posted a profit of $8.9 billion, 33% higher y-o-y, and generated strong cash flows of more than $12 billion and achieved debt reduction of about $5.4 billion. The miner announced last October it would return $10.4 billion to shareholders via a stock buyback and special dividend, after the sale of its US oil and gas assets.<\/p>\n<p>BHP&#8217;s performance &#8220;will remain positive in the coming years thanks to a diversified portfolio of large, long-life and low-cost assets across various commodities and geographies,&#8221; the report says, citing the fact that many of BHP&#8217;s current exploration is in low-risk jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-risk.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-999666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-risk.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-risk-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/BHP-risk-768x447.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Fitch Solutions adds that they believe BHP will cut debt further by spending less on greenfield exploration, and it will also see a boost in productivity through technology investments.
