{"id":1130553,"date":"2019-08-02T16:29:41","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T21:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=998316"},"modified":"2019-08-02T16:29:41","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T21:29:41","slug":"gold-exploration-trends-drilling-declines-advanced-projects-a-priority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1130553","title":{"rendered":"Gold exploration trends: drilling declines, advanced projects a priority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We analysed monthly gold exploration trends from January to June 2019 using data from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miningintelligence.com\/\">Mining Intelligence Data Application<\/a>. The data used represents reporting companies listed on the following stock exchanges: TSX (+TSX-V), ASX, LSE (+LSE-AIM), NYSE, and JSE.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mining Intelligence data indicates that old exploration activities have slowed down \u2014  to the lowest point since the beginning of 2019, and both the number of drilled projects and the number of completed drillholes have declined.<\/p>\n<p>A shift towards exploration of advanced projects continued in June 2019,  signalling that companies prefer to extend a resource base of existing mines and advanced projects rather than invest in much riskier early-stage drilling programs.<\/p>\n<p>While not yet a<br \/>\ntrend, there was a noticeable decline in the quality of drill results, with<br \/>\nmid- and high-grade gold intersections have fallen from 45% of their total<br \/>\ncount in May 2019 to 36% in June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a 6% month-on-month surge in gold prices achieved in June 2019, and overall optimism reviving across gold mining sector, companies are still very conservative when investing in drilling. <\/p>\n<p>However, there is a good chance that gold exploration budgets will be adjusted in the second half of the year to keep up with the improved market conditions that can encourage miners, developers and explorers to take more long-term exploration risks. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Analysis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In June 2019, companies reported exploration results for 110 projects <em>(Figure 1)<\/em>, which is the lowest count observed since the beginning of 2019. Australia was the leading country in terms of a number of projects drilled (37), followed by Canada (33) and South America (17).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-998333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-1.jpg 977w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-1-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-1-768x597.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 977px) 100vw, 977px\" \/><figcaption> Figure 1. Source: Mining Intelligence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In June, companies reported results from 1,452 drillholes, which is the lowest number yet in 2019 <em>(Figure 2<\/em>). Source: Mining Intelligence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In June, early and<br \/>\nadvanced exploration projects were still comprising the majority of total<br \/>\nprojects drilled (59 out of 110 projects or 54%, Figure 3), but their share<br \/>\ndropped significantly from the height of 69% reached in March (87 out of 125<br \/>\nprojects). <\/p>\n<p>The number of greenfield<br \/>\nexploration projects drilled dropped from 33 in March to 16 in June, which is<br \/>\nthe lowest level since the beginning of 2019. <\/p>\n<p>Companies are still very prudent when allocating budgets to exploration campaigns and do prefer to extend resource base of existing mines and advanced projects rather than investing in much riskier early-stage drilling programs. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-998343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-3.jpg 944w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-3-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-3-768x471.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px\" \/><figcaption>Figure3. Source: Mining Intelligence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As for the quality of drill results, there was a noticeable decline in mid- and high-grade gold intersections that fell from 45% of their total count (2,944 out of 6,481) in May 2019 to 36% (1,919 out of 5,279 intersections) in June 2019 (Figure 4). Month-on-month deteriorated quality of gold exploration results is not yet a trend, but, if continued throughout the rest of the year, this could be a significant factor impacting both the gold market fundamentals and economic indicators of future mining projects as well.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-998346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-4.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.mining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Vlad-graf-4-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><figcaption>Figure 4. Where multiple hi-grade intersections were reported for an individual project, only the best interval has been considered<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>#1 Idaho-Maryland \u2013 1,015 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Rise Gold\u2019s Idaho-Maryland project is a major past producing high-grade gold mine located near Grass Valley, California, USA. It produced a total of 2,414,000 oz gold with an average mill head grade of 0.50oz\/ton (~17g\/t) before being forced to shut down by the U.S. government in 1942. Rise Gold believes that Idaho is a Tier 1 gold deposit. Recent exploration drilling demonstrates continuation of bonanza-grade gold mineralization to depths of over 1 km below historic mine.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#2 Tennant Creek \u2013 678 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Emmerson Resources\u2019 Tennant Creek Mineral Field is situated approximately 500km north of Alice Springs, Australia. Emmerson intersected bonanza gold grades in all diamond drill holes at Mauretania greenfield discovery. Recent drilling results from Mauretania have increased Emmerson\u2019s confidence in the potential for economic mineralisation in both the shallow oxide and deeper primary gold zones. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>#3 Windfall Lake \u2013 660 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Osisko Mining\u2019s Windfall Lake project located in the Abitibi greenstone belt 700 kilometres north-northwest of Montr\u00e9al, Canada. The Windfall Lake Mine Project is a proposed underground gold mine with preliminary assessed AISC of $704\/ozt per year.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#4 Brucejack \u2013 602 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pretium Resources\u2019 Brucejack<br \/>\nMine is a high-grade gold underground mine located in northwestern British<br \/>\nColumbia, approximately 65 kilometers north of Stewart. The mine began<br \/>\ncommercial operation in July 2017. Gold production for 2018 was 376,012 ounces<br \/>\nof gold at all-in sustaining costs of $764 per ounce of gold sold. Proven and<br \/>\nProbable mineral reserves in the Valley of the Kings of 6.4 million ounces of<br \/>\ngold make Brucejack one of the biggest gold deposits in the world.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#5 Amalia \u2013 546 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Radius Gold\u2019s Amalia Project is<br \/>\nlocated 25 km SW of the historic Guadalupe y Calvo mining district in Chihuahua,<br \/>\nMexico. Radius geologists discovered high grade epithermal silver-gold<br \/>\nmineralization in several veins, vein breccias and disseminated zones over<br \/>\n3.5km of strike length and a 750m vertical interval following the trace of a<br \/>\nlarge regional fault zone. Radius believes the system is wide open and shows<br \/>\npotential for a significant discovery.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#6 Island \u2013 503 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Alamos Gold\u2019s Island Gold is a long-life,<br \/>\nhigh-grade, low-cost underground gold mine located in Ontario, Canada. Island<br \/>\nGold is one of Canada\u2019s highest grade and lowest cost gold mines. The operation<br \/>\nis undergoing an expansion. The mine also has a large mineral resource base,<br \/>\nstrong track record of resource conversion and significant ongoing exploration<br \/>\npotential with the deposit open laterally and at depth.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#7 Penny West \u2013 420 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Spectrum Metals\u2019 Penny West project is located 25km south of Youanmi Mining Centre, Western Australia. Penny West is one of the highest-grade open-pit past-producing mines in WA in the modern era. Spectrum continues to expand the Penny North high-grade discovery. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>#8 Aldiss \u2013 420 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Silver Lake Resources\u2019 Aldiss camp<br \/>\nis third Mining Centre of the company at Mount Monger, Australia. Broad<br \/>\nhigh-grade gold lodes at Aldiss interpreted to continue down plunge, highly<br \/>\nencouraging for future underground potential.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#9 Barry \u2013 394 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bonterra Resources\u2019 Barry project<br \/>\nis a shear-hosted gold deposit located in Quebec, Canada. The gold<br \/>\nmineralization consists of disseminated sulfides within the shear zones and the<br \/>\nveins with local visible gold. In May 2019, a NI-43-101 mineral resource<br \/>\nestimate completed by SGS states 2,052,000 tons at 5.84 g\/t Au for 385,000 Oz.<br \/>\nAu in the Indicated category and 2,740,000 tons at 5.14 g\/t Au for 453,000 Oz<br \/>\nau in the Inferred category. The deposit remains open for expansion.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>#10 Sanbrado \u2013 383 gram-meter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>West African Resources\u2019 Sanbrado<br \/>\nis a high-grade gold project located 90km east-southeast of Ouagadougou, the<br \/>\ncapital of Burkina Faso. West African Resources has recently commenced<br \/>\nconstruction of mine at Sanbrado and first gold is expected in 2020.
