{"id":1128856,"date":"2019-07-25T11:33:05","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T16:33:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=997568"},"modified":"2019-07-25T11:33:05","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T16:33:05","slug":"chinas-fulin-ditches-plans-for-battery-parts-plant-in-chile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1128856","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Fulin ditches plans for battery parts plant in Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China&#8217;s Fulin Transportation Group became Thursday the last company<br \/>\nto shatter Chile\u2019s hopes of &nbsp;jumpstarting its own lithium battery industry<br \/>\ninstead of just exporting the raw material, as it has abandoned a project to<br \/>\nbuild a plant in the country\u2019s north.<\/p>\n<div class='d-flex justify-content-center'>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The decision, confirmed by the country\u2019s development agency <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biobiochile.cl\/noticias\/economia\/actualidad-economica\/2019\/07\/25\/corfo-confirma-que-se-cayeron-3-proyectos-ligados-al-litio-y-que-eran-fundamentales-para-la-economia.shtml\" >Corfo on Thursday<\/a>, comes on the heels of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/south-koreas-posco-drops-plans-for-chilean-battery-material-plant\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">similar move by South Korea\u2019s POSCO<\/a>. The steelmaker said in June it was ending a joint venture with Samsung&#8217;s battery unit&nbsp;to build a similar facility in the country\u2019s lithium-rich Atacama Desert.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Chilean chemical company Molymet also scraps its plans.<\/p>\n<p>The three companies had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/chinese-korean-group-to-build-2-billion-lithium-batteries-plant-in-chile\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">won a tender opened by Corfo in April 2017<\/a> to attract battery makers to set shop in the country. In exchange, the government committed to supply lithium for 27 years at a discount.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>We will continue our efforts of attracting companies willing to build facilities that add value to the lithium supply chain.<\/p>\n<p><cite>Chile&#8217;s Development Agency, CORFO. <\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The agreements were based on an expected production increase<br \/>\nby US-based Albemarle Corp, the world\u2019s top lithium producer, which has a<br \/>\ncontract with Corfo to supply 25%of its Chilean production to companies<br \/>\ndesignated by the government.<\/p>\n<p>But Albermale\u2019s plans to boost production have been delayed<br \/>\nby technological and regulatory hurdles. Besides, the company does not produce<br \/>\nthe type of processed lithium required&nbsp;by the likes of POSCO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue our efforts of attracting companies willing to build facilities that add value to the lithium supply chain,&#8221; Corfo said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>A new auction, scheduled for early next year, will offer<br \/>\ndiscounted lithium from Albemarle\u2019s competitor SQM to companies willing to<br \/>\nbuild battery plants in the country, the world&#8217;s No. 2&nbsp;producer of the<br \/>\nwhite metal.<\/p>\n<p>Chile, the world\u2019s top copper producer, contains more than<br \/>\nhalf of the world\u2019s most \u201ceconomically extractable\u201d lithium reserves, according<br \/>\nto the US Geographical Survey (USGS).
