{"id":1123483,"date":"2019-06-27T10:39:08","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T10:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=995142"},"modified":"2019-06-27T10:39:08","modified_gmt":"2019-06-27T10:39:08","slug":"chile-goes-carbon-neutral-begins-closing-first-eight-coal-fired-power-stations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1123483","title":{"rendered":"Chile goes carbon-neutral, begins closing first eight coal-fired power stations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chile is stepping up efforts to switch entirely to renewable energy by 2040 by kicking off the process of closing eight coal-fired power stations over the next five years.<\/p>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0'><script>googletag.cmd.push(function() {googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1561499308230-0');});<\/script><\/div>\n<p>The move, though earlier than anticipated, is part of a plan to go carbon neutral by 2050 announced in early June by conservative President Sebastian Pi\u00f1era.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Enel Generaci\u00f3n Chile filed for authorization by\u00a0the Chilean Energy Commission (CNE) to take offline the Tarapaca coal-fired power plant by December 31.<\/p>\n<p>The utility initially intended to end operations at the<br \/>\nplant in May 2020, as outlined in the agreement to phase out coal-fired<br \/>\ngeneration capacity with the Chilean government.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, southern Chile-based coal miner Mina Invierno, <a href=\"https:\/\/mundo.sputniknews.com\/america-latina\/201906261087774257-despiden-a-150-trabajadores-de-mina-de-carbon-en-el-sur-de-chile\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">laid off 150 people<\/a> and began closure activities almost four months earlier than originally announced.<\/p>\n<p>The move followed an environmental court of Valdivia\u2019s<br \/>\ndecision to uphold a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnamericas.com\/en\/news\/chile-court-upholds-blasting-ban-for-mina-invierno\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">precautionary measure<\/a>&nbsp;prohibiting blasting at mine as<br \/>\nit didn\u2019t comply with environmental standards.<\/p>\n<p>The South American country, which will host the 21 leaders<br \/>\nof the Pacific Rim for the APEC Summit in November and then UN climate<br \/>\nnegotiations (known as COP25) a couple of weeks later, estimates the announced<br \/>\nclosures account for 20% of the national energy capacity, or 23,000 megawatts.<\/p>\n<p>World\u2019s top copper producer Chile has historically been a<br \/>\nnet importer of energy. Over the last decade, however, the nation has<br \/>\nincreasingly relied on coal-powered electricity generation, mostly due to the<br \/>\nend of imports of natural gas from neighbouring Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>But shipments from across the Andes resumed in 2018, helping<br \/>\nChile to lessen its dependence on coal.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, about 40% of Chile&#8217;s electricity generation comes<br \/>\nfrom 28 coal-fired power stations.
