Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE: NEM) (TSX: NGT) has resumed shipping concentrate from its Pe\u00f1asquito gold mine<\/a> in Mexico following the lifting of an illegal blockade by a trucking contractor and some members of the Cedros community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Access to the site was blocked on March 27, forcing the world\u2019s largest gold producer<\/a>\u00a0by market value, output and reserves to halt operations in late April<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During the temporary suspension of operations, the mine used
\nthe downtime to bring forward maintenance on a variety of systems and
\nequipment, Newmont Goldcorp said in the statement.<\/p>\n

The open-pit mine, in northern Zacatecas state, produced 272,000 ounces of gold last year, accounting for about 17% of the combined company\u2019s net asset value, according to Scotiabank.<\/p>\n

In the last three years, Pe\u00f1asquito has been the target of protests<\/a> of landowners, truck drivers and
\nresidents of nearby towns. They mostly demand jobs, compensation for alleged
\nenvironmental damages and clean water for their communities.<\/p>\n

The mine\u2019s previous owner, Goldcorp,\u00a0recently said<\/a>\u00a0that objections to the mine decreased by almost 66% last year due to improved relations with locals, including building a\u00a0rural health centre\u00a0in the town of Cedros and launching an economic development program for small businesses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
