The world\u2019s biggest miner, BHP (<\/span>NYSE: BHP)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0published risk assessment results on Friday that revealed\u00a0<\/span>five of its\u00a0<\/span>tailings dams that would be at \u201cextreme risk\u201d of damage to local environments and harm to nearby residents if they failed, the Financial Times reported.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Australian miner released<\/span>\u00a0risk assessment results in response to pressure from a group of investors\u00a0that requested information on facilities controlled by nearly 700 mining companies be disclosed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he Sydney Morning Herald reported<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that BHP told investors that\u00a0<\/span>32 of its 67 tailing dams around the world<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/span>hold sometimes dangerous mining by-products were ‘high risk’ or worse under Canadian Dam Association dam safety classifications<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Investor Mining & Tailings Safety Initiative in April\u00a0<\/span>requested that over 600 resource companies<\/span><\/a>, including major miners,\u00a0<\/span>reveal the safety records of their waste storage facilities<\/span><\/a>, following the\u00a0collapse of\u00a0<\/span>Vale\u2019s Brumadinho dam in Brazil\u00a0in January<\/span><\/a>, which killed hundreds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the disaster, a group of 96 institutional investors, representing more than $10.3 trillion assets under management, to 683\u00a0extractive companies seeking greater disclosure on the\u00a0management of tailings storage facilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About 100 investors, led by the Church of England Pensions Board and Sweden\u2019s public pension fund, requested that the companies to publish the\u00a0<\/span>answers to 20 questions sent<\/span><\/a>, covering issues such as the height and type of dams they have, their capacity, engineering records and safety checks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Industry group the International Council on Mining and Minerals (ICMM)\u00a0<\/span>said in March<\/span><\/a>\u00a0it was working with the United Nations Environment\u00a0Programme\u00a0(UNEP) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) to develop new standards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BHP said it is establishing a dedicated tailings task force focused on\u00a0 internal dam management and development of international best practice.<\/span><\/p>\n
