The source, who said Barrick would &#8220;analyze&#8221; the ruling, spoke anonymously, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Min<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0have long marked this region for its rich gold, silver and copper deposits, and have been on standby for nearly a decade awaiting a judicial decision from Argentina\u2019s top tribunal as to whether or not they could mine in glacier terrain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d data-contrast=\"none\">, prohibiting any industrial activity that could harm glaciers and periglacial areas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was passed in 2008, unanimously by Congress, when then activist Environment Secretary Romina\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Picolotti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">brought<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the draft law through Congress with no opposition whatsoever<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Taillant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Then President <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fern\u00e1ndez<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0de Kirchner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">vetoed the new Glacier Law on the grounds that it was detrimental to the mining sector.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nvironmentalists\u00a0fought for the return of the Glacier Law, and in 2010 Congress passed a national Glacier Protection Law,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">prohibit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mining\u00a0<\/span>and oil and gas projects\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"none\">in glacier and permafrost areas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0making the law retroactive.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chile&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Environmental Court<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrick.com\/English\/news\/news-details\/2015\/Chiles-Environmental-Court-Rejects-Claims-that-Pascua-Lama-has-Damaged-Glaciers\/default.aspx\"  rel=\"noopener\"> ruled that the Pascua-Lama<\/a> project had not damaged glaciers within the project&#8217;s area of influence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Argentina\u2019s public officials in the mining sector, and environmental authorities <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">took nearly 10 years to carry out the glacier inventory which the law called\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0failed to crack down on mining operations already in glacier areas, which the law also mandated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that the court system would take years, or even decades to rule on the case, pro-mining public officials went about their business as if the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Glacier Law<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">did not exist, encouraging mining companies to move forward with investments, although the billions of dollars promised by mining companies to extract gold, silver and copper, did not materialize,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d\u00a0Taillant\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Argentina&#8217;s Supreme Court knocked down\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the miner\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0arguments,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">inta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ining that the company failed to show that the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">G<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lacier\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Protection Law\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">affected mining investments.\u00a0<\/span><span regulations has been a perverse move that fortunately lost.\u00a0Now, it is necessary to enforce the law and close Veladero.\u00a0We\u00a0can not\u00a0allow more mining on the glaciers of the Argentines,\u00a0&#8220;<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0said\u00a0Gonzalo Strano, a Greenpeace Argentina spokesperson<a
