The Government of Canada\u2019s Qu\u00e9bec province announced on Wednesday that\u00a0it will invest C$1.75 million<\/a> (about $1.27m) to connect Newmont Goldcorp’s Eleonore mine facilities to the existing regional\u00a0<\/span>fibre<\/span>\u00a0optic network.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project will enable Newmont Goldcorp to continue advancing its vision to create mine 4.0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0an interconnected mine of the future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The connection, which will help optimize the company’s operations, will also increase the quality of life of workers on site. “The mining sector is entering a new era with mine 4.0.” \u2014\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec Minister of Energy and Natural Resources<\/q><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jonatan Julien, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the C\u00f4te-Nord region, made the announcement while visiting Eleonore Mine in the presence of the Grand Chief and Chairperson of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou\u00a0Istchee), Dr.\u00a0Abel\u00a0Bosum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

124 kilometers of\u00a0<\/span>fibre<\/span>\u00a0optic cable will be laid from the\u00a0Eastmain\u00a01A link to the Eleonore Mine. This project, valued at C$3.5 million, will be delivered by the non-profit organization\u00a0Eeyou\u00a0Communications Network (ECN). The new high-speed connection is expected to be operational in 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The mining sector is entering a new era with mine 4.0. Today’s funding will contribute to the \u00c9l\u00e9onore mine’s competitiveness in the future: access to a reliable and high-performance telecommunications network is fundamental for the industry to modernize,\u201d said Julien\u00a0in the media statement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eeyou<\/span>\u00a0Communications Network (ECN) is a not-for-profit telecommunications corporation that provides broadband carrier services for the Cree communities of\u00a0<\/span>Eeyou<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Istchee<\/span>\u00a0and municipalities of the\u00a0James Bay\u00a0region.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Newmont Goldcorp’s Eleonore Mine welcomes this commitment to innovation and investment in the\u00a0<\/span>Eeyou<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Istchee<\/span>\u00a0territory. This joint investment from our Cree partner, ECN, and the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 du Plan Nord will connect the mine to a\u00a0fibre\u00a0optic network, providing far more bandwidth than we have today,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Sophie Bergeron, General manager, Eleonore Mine, Newmont Goldcorp<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bergeron added that with this technology backbone in place, new sustainable and responsible mining developments can consolidate the leadership role the province plays in\u00a0Canada’s\u00a0mining sector.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
