The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) released the\u00a0Benchmarking 2018 Safety Data<\/i>\u00a0report on Wednesday, detailing the\u00a0safety data of its company members.<\/p>\n

The report, which collates the safety data of about a million workers and contractors, recorded 50 fatalities in 2018. This was a decrease from 51 fatalities in 2017 and 63 fatalities in 2016.<\/span>
\nThis benchmarking report\u00a0<\/span>includes data from 2018 and\u00a0<\/span>does not include fatalities from the\u00a0<\/span>Brumadinho<\/span>\u00a0tragedy that occurred in January 2019.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> 11 of ICMM\u2019s 27 company members reported no fatalities in 2018 compared to eight in 2017<\/q>

\nEleven of ICMM\u2019s 27 company members reported no fatalities in 2018 compared to eight in 2017.\u00a0<\/span>Miners reporting no fatalities<\/span>\u00a0were: Africa Rainbow Minerals, Barrick, Freeport McMoRan, Goldcorp, JX Nippon, Minera San Crist\u00f3bal,\u00a0<\/span>Minsur<\/span>, Mitsubishi Materials, Newcrest,\u00a0<\/span>Orano<\/span>, and Sumitomo.<\/span><\/p>\n

The number of hours worked across ICMM\u2019s members increased by 16<\/span>%<\/span>\u00a0due to data included from new company members:\u00a0Minera San Crist\u00f3bal,\u00a0<\/span>Minsur<\/span>, Newcrest and Vale. While total fatalities dropped by 2<\/span>%<\/span>, the fatality frequency rate dropped 19<\/span>%\u00a0<\/span>from 0.027 to 0.022 fatalities per million hours worked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThere was also a drop in the injury rate from 3.94 in 2017 to 3.41<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0despite an increase in the number of recordable injuries from 7,515 to 7,751.<\/span> The highest number of fatalities (14) occurred in South Africa, where 400 million hours were worked<\/q>
