{"id":1116683,"date":"2019-05-17T18:20:45","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T18:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=988211"},"modified":"2019-05-17T18:20:45","modified_gmt":"2019-05-17T18:20:45","slug":"canada-injects-325k-into-climate-change-adaptation-for-mining-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1116683","title":{"rendered":"Canada injects $325K into \u2018climate change adaptation\u2019 for mining sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada is giving the country\u2019s mining association more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/canada-invests-in-climate-change-adaptation-for-the-mining-sector-869258057.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">C$325,000 ($242K) to develop a program that would\u00a0give miners the tools and knowledge<\/a> needed to better plan for climate change in decision-making at all stages of an operation\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>The project \u2013\u00a0Climate Change Risk and Adaptation Best Practices for the Mining Sector\u00a0\u2013\u00a0 was announced Friday by Paul Lefebvre, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources.<\/p>\n<p>Funded partly through Natural Resources Canada&#8217;s Climate Change Adaptation Program, the new program will enable the Mining Association of\u00a0Canada\u00a0(MAC) to work with industry and other experts in developing best practices and guidance for the mining sector on climate change risks and adaptation measures, Lefebvre said.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>The program will enable the country&#8217;s mining sector body to develop best practices and guidance for miners on climate change risks and adaptation measures<\/q><\/p>\n<p>MAC, Golder Associates and Lorax Environmental Services are financially contributing to the project, which has a total value of C$650,000.<\/p>\n<p>The investment builds on other Government of\u00a0Canada\u00a0initiatives (or Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan), developed in conjunction with provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous peoples, industry and civil society.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By investing in sustainable mining projects like this one by the Mining Association of\u00a0Canada, our government is helping ensure that our natural resources, including minerals and metals, play an important role in supplying the building blocks for clean technologies across the world,\u201d Lefebvre said. \u201cBy helping our mining sector to adapt to a changing climate, we are proving once more that the environment and the economy go hand in hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Canadians divided<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Since assuming leadership of the country, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pushed a green agenda only to see both politicians and the general public grow skeptical.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-left'>Canada\u2019s push to cut greenhouse gas emissions had focused mostly on the oil and gas industry, responsible for 60% of the country\u2019s total industrial emissions<\/q><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more he insists that the environment and the economy go hand in hand, the more both sides feel betrayed,\u201d <em>Bloomberg&#8217;s<\/em> analyst, Josh Wingrove, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/web\/even-trudeaus-canada-gripped-carbon-fight-wont-ditch-coal\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">wrote last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, Canada\u2019s push to cut greenhouse gas emissions had focused mostly on the oil and gas industry, responsible for 60% of the country\u2019s total industrial emissions. In March, the federal government announced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/canada-invests-72m-clean-technology-two-alberta-companies\/\">plans to invest $72.3 million in clean technology<\/a> for the Alberta-centred sector to address climate change and create jobs. After all, the province is home to the oil sands, the world\u2019s third-largest crude reserve, and the country\u2019s biggest emitter due to oil production and coal-fired electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is not the only country to make climate change a key issue around elections time. Nearly one-third of the Australian electorate (29%) rates the topic as an important concern ahead of Saturday&#8217;s federal vote, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-04-17\/vote-compass-election-most-important-issues\/11003192\"  rel=\"noopener\">a voluntary online survey<\/a>\u00a0of about 120,000 respondents conducted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/votecompass.abc.net.au\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Vote Compass<\/a>\u00a0last month for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>The Labor Party, main contender to the current centre-right government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison,\u00a0wants Australia to generate 50% of its electricity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/05\/climate-change-decisive-issue-australian-election-190516032148978.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">from solar, wind and other renewable sources<\/a> by 2030.
