{"id":1114516,"date":"2019-05-06T14:00:51","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T14:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=985844"},"modified":"2019-05-06T14:00:51","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T14:00:51","slug":"minnesota-environmentalists-step-up-fight-against-twin-metals-copper-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1114516","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota environmentalists step up fight against Twin Metals\u2019 copper project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of businesses, environmental advocates and outdoor recreation groups in the state of Minnesota, U.S., have\u00a0gone to court\u00a0challenging a\u00a0Trump administration\u2019s decision that opened the door to a copper, nickel and platinum project in a wilderness area.<\/p>\n<p>Chilean miner Antofagasta (LON:ANTO), through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antofagasta.co.uk\/what-we-do\/locations\/usa\/twin-metals\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">subsidiary Twin Metals<\/a>, is in the midst of carrying out a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/antofagasta-expects-copper-deficit-300000-tonnes-year\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">feasibility study for the project<\/a>, an underground copper-nickel mine and processing facility along the shores of Birch Lake and the South Kawishiwi River, which lie in the Rainy River watershed.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>Coalition has gone to court challenging a Trump administration\u2019s decision that opened the door to Twin Metals\u2019 copper, nickel and platinum project in a wilderness area of Minnesota.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the location of the project which has triggered concerns among locals. Last week, \u00a0more than two dozen former U.S. Forest Service staffers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2019\/05\/03\/retired-forest-service-officials-raise-concerns-about-twin-metals-\"  rel=\"noopener\">sent a letter to the government<\/a>, outlining the risks a proposed mine in the area would carry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Irrefutable scientific studies and all of our experience tell us that in this extremely valuable, water-rich and highly interconnected place you simply cannot have both copper mining and healthy forests, water and communities,&#8221; the letter, addressed to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, who oversees the Forest Service, and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, reads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Speculation about the impact of a potential mine at this time, before a proposal has even been submitted, is just that \u2014 speculation,&#8221; the company said in a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2019\/05\/03\/retired-forest-service-officials-raise-concerns-about-twin-metals-\"  rel=\"noopener\">sent to MPRNews<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, however, challenges the government\u2019s reversal of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-administration-to-grant-mining-leases-that-will-benefit-landlord-of-presidents-daughter-ivanka-trump-1513989674\">\u00a0an Obama-era decision<\/a>\u00a0blocking all new mining projects within the watershed for 20 years and requiring an environmental impact study for the proposed mine.<\/p>\n<p>Former President George W.
