{"id":1114359,"date":"2019-05-03T14:34:46","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T14:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oilandgas-investments.com\/?p=31369"},"modified":"2019-05-03T14:34:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T14:34:46","slug":"justin-trudeau-the-best-friend-to-canadian-oil-producers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1114359","title":{"rendered":"Justin Trudeau: The Best Friend to Canadian Oil Producers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Can somebody tell me why the (Canadian) oil industry hates Justin Trudeau so much?<\/p>\n<p>Alberta seems to think the Prime Minister has it in for them.\u00a0 They\u2019ve gone so far as to send a caravan of trucks across the country just to let him know how angry they are!<\/p>\n<p>But I just don\u2019t get it.\u00a0 Don\u2019t these people understand?<\/p>\n<p>Justin Trudeau is Canadian oil producer&#8217;s best friend.<\/p>\n<p>These companies are PRINTING MONEY \u2013 and who do they have to thank for a big piece of it?<\/p>\n<p>You got it \u2013 Justin.<\/p>\n<p>CHA-CHING!<\/p>\n<p>Oh sure, he\u2019s bungled the pipeline debate to high heaven.\u00a0 Overpaid for a pipeline that may never get built.\u00a0 Praised the industry while stabbing it in the back with Bill-C69, which will make it much harder for any new pipeline to ever get built.<\/p>\n<p>I get it.\u00a0 He\u2019s not perfect.\u00a0 But who is?<\/p>\n<p>What is overlooked is that Justin has put an extra $10\/barrel directly in each oil producer&#8217;s pocket.<\/p>\n<p>How many times can you say a government gave a gift like that?\u00a0 Not too often.<\/p>\n<p>So how did Justin give the oil business such a boost?<\/p>\n<p>Simple.\u00a0 He has done his darnedest to make sure the Canadian economy underperforms.<\/p>\n<p>Squeeze small business.\u00a0 Raise taxes.\u00a0 Make it nearly impossible to buy a home.\u00a0 He\u2019s popped the balloon on growth better than an economic hitman.<\/p>\n<p>And it worked!\u00a0 Just last month the Bank of Canada slashed GDP growth forecast to 1.2% in 2019.\u00a0 That is down from an already paltry 1.7%.\u00a0 Bank of Canada Governor Stephan Poloz all but admits that rate cuts are in the cards.<\/p>\n<p>A bad economy means a bad currency \u2013 and that&#8217;s good for Canadian oil producers.\u00a0 The Canadian Dollar hit a four month low recently on the downbeat forecast from the Bank of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>But wait you say \u2013 they Canadian Dollar is up on the year, right? Marginally.\u00a0 That\u2019s not so bad.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true.\u00a0 But it misses the big picture.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices surged more than 40% since the beginning of year.<\/p>\n<p>On December 24<sup>th<\/sup> the price of WTI crude was $43\/bbl and the Canadian dollar was 73.5 US cents.\u00a0 On April 23,\u00a0 WTI crude hit $66\/bbl and the Canadian dollar then was is 74.46 US cents.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Dollar is a petro-currency.\u00a0 As oil goes, so does the loonie.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oilandgas-investments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31370\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/oilandgas-investments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Until now.<\/p>\n<p>The historic correlation between oil and the Canadian dollar has long been accepted.\u00a0 But over the last couple of years, and this year in particular, that correlation has entirely broken down.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oilandgas-investments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31371\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/oilandgas-investments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: XM.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the economy stupid.\u00a0 Even a healthy oil market can\u2019t help Canada right now.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few things at play.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Cooper, head of FX solutions and strategy at RBC Wealth, says that pipeline constraints are the culprit.\u00a0 The lack of growth is keeping a lid on bullish oil sentiment and with it, any appreciation of the loonie.<\/p>\n<p>Second, as Poloz hinted and many other economists have said, the Canadian economy is just not doing that well.<\/p>\n<p>As famed economist David Rosenberg recently pointed out, Canadians are taking more part time jobs, racking up more debt, and seeing very little income growth.\u00a0 Meanwhile the last federal budget did nothing to fix the real problem \u2013 declining productivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeclining productivity\u201d \u2013 that\u2019s just another way of saying we are getting less competitive.<\/p>\n<p>Which is exactly what you\u2019d expect to happen with Justin\u2019s policies.\u00a0 It all means dim prospects for the loonie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re basically looking at a situation that is very difficult to find any positives for the Canadian dollar overall,\u201d said TD currency strategist Mazen Issa \u201cIn fact, it\u2019s probably going to continue to get worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But wait.\u00a0 It\u2019s not all bad news.\u00a0\u00a0 The weak dollar is a BOON for oil companies.<\/p>\n<p>Every cent of decline is another dollar in producers\u2019 pockets.<\/p>\n<p>Based on historic norms I would wager that with WTI at $65\/bbl the loonie should be at around 85 cents right now.\u00a0 Instead it\u2019s below 75 cents.<\/p>\n<p>That difference equates to a $10\/bbl lift in prices for Canadian producers.<\/p>\n<p>Subtract some royalties and the rest of that drops straight to cash flow.<\/p>\n<p>By way of example, let\u2019s take <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>MEG Energy (MEG-TSX)<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0 It&#8217;s a highly levered, mid-tier oil producer.\u00a0 MEG generates a whopping $350 million in additional cash flow with the Canadian Dollar at 75 cents versus if it was at 85 cents.<\/p>\n<p>Meg Energy has a $2 billion market capitalization.\u00a0 That means that MEG is getting 15% free cash flow \u2013 directly from Justin!<\/p>\n<p>This is just one example.\u00a0 I could go down the list of Canadian oil companies and give you the same sort of numbers:\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Crescent Point, Cenovus, Whitecap<\/span>,<\/strong> and so on.<\/p>\n<p>All that cash.\u00a0 Stuffing their coffers.<em>\u00a0 They owe Justin so much<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But what thanks does he get?\u00a0 How is he repaid for squashing the Canadian economy, killing productivity, just at the time when oil prices start to take off?<\/p>\n<p>He gets nothing. No love.
