{"id":1114220,"date":"2019-05-03T13:00:24","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T13:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/?p=985557"},"modified":"2019-05-03T13:00:24","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T13:00:24","slug":"tesla-warns-of-upcoming-battery-minerals-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/juniorminingnews.com\/?p=1114220","title":{"rendered":"Tesla warns of upcoming battery minerals shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to soar, investment in companies mining for the so-called battery metals is lagging far behind, which may trigger an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/electric-cars-dreams-may-shattered-2050-lack-cobalt-lithium-supplies\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">upcoming global shortage<\/a> of those minerals, a Tesla executive has warned.<\/p>\n<p>The EVs manufacturer pioneer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/usa-lithium-electric-tesla-exclusive-int\/exclusive-tesla-expects-global-shortage-of-electric-vehicle-battery-minerals-sources-idUSKCN1S81QI\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Reuters<\/em> reports,<\/a>\u00a0has also said it believed that prices for key elements in the making of rechargeable batteries, including cobalt, lithium, nickel and copper, could increase exponentially as a consequence of limited supply.<\/p>\n<p><q class='pullQuote-right'>The electric vehicles pioneer worries that prices for key elements in the making of rechargeable batteries, including cobalt, lithium, nickel and copper, could increase exponentially as a consequence of limited supply.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>The comments by Sarah Maryssael, Tesla\u2019s global supply manager of battery metals, echo those of other carmakers, such as Ford Motor, Toyota and BMW, which have said the auto industry would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/ford-says-carmakers-may-need-invest-cobalt-mines-soon\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">need to invest directly in battery metals mines<\/a> in order to secure supply over the next three to five years.<\/p>\n<p>Ford, which plans to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/ford-says-carmakers-may-need-invest-cobalt-mines-soon\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">launch new EVs as soon as next year<\/a>, has been reducing the proportion of cobalt it uses to lower its dependency on it. And while the company doesn\u2019t see the need to participate in mining, or have direct cobalt offtake agreements, it has admitted it may re-evaluate that decision in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Early last year, Toyota Motor Corp, Asia\u2019s No.1 car manufacturer, said it had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/toyota-make-cheaper-electric-motors-need-half-amount-rare-earths\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">found a way to make EVs<\/a>\u00a0more affordable and less vulnerable to shortages in supply of the key elements needed.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement followed Samsung SDI&#8217;s. South Korea\u2019s leading battery maker plans to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/soaring-cobalt-prices-force-samsung-sdi-mine-metal-old-phones\/\">recycle cobalt from used\u00a0mobile phones<\/a>\u00a0and develop\u00a0lithium-ion batteries\u00a0with minimum content of the metal, or no cobalt at all, as a way to offset soaring commodity prices.<\/p>\n<p>BMW is another of the top carmakers that expects demand for battery metals to go ballistic. It predicts the need for those materials\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mining.com\/volkswagen-spend-50-billion-electric-car-offensive\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">will grow 10-fold by 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most carmakers have chosen nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries (NMC).
